higher octane is always a must and a plus with advanced timing....hence the reasons when you switch to 116 you can retune with more timing which is what actually yeilds you such a power gain with higher octane like that.

It's still safe to use 87 octane with timing at 17 correct? Because it says in the hadn book that came with my car that timing at 17 is still in the stock range.

i would say that 87 at 17* is really pushing it and i wouldnt take the chance.

i have thought about making the jump to race gas just becuase going with race gas and then having it retuned at the same psi level i could be making upwards of 300 and right now im at 8.5psi making 270bhp, i dont drive the car all the time i only have 700 miles on the car so making the jump to race gas would be really benificial to me, becuase of not daily driving and the ammount of power i would gain from doing so, definitly benificial, but i wouldnt make the jump to race gas otherwise if i was daily driving the cost would be insane

I say at least 89 for 17*, otherwise like other guys said your pushing your luck.

By all means your car will still run, but your knock sensor will retard your timing according to the gas and you will get crappy performance and MPG's

FSM says 15 deg + or - 2 deg with 87 So you can advance up to 17deg with 87 but what do I know

I know what FSM says but It's better to be safe then sorry. You might get some pinging under load...

Take this into account, if premium is $0.25 above the standard 87 octane gas (overestimate):

-- Your maximum fillup is around 10 - 11.5 gallons depending on which sr powered car you drive...
-- Your maximum difference if fillup price from 87 to 93/4 would be $2.88 more
-- If you filled up once per week every single week of the year, you would only be paying $150 more per year.

It's not that much more really... so I use premium in all my cars, and I always have. But it doesn't really hurt to use regular.

Don't eat out for a week and you can afford premium!
