Need moral support / advice: replacing rear engine mount.
Hey dudes.

So i successfully replaced 3 of the 4 motor mounts: front, and both sides, but the rear motor mount remains.. and it looks particularly ominous to tackle.

Seems like the crossmember must be removed in order to get to it.. this makes me nervous.

What's the best way to replace this rear mount? thanks.

Your other mounts will hold the engine up. Shouldn't be an issue. You may have to lift the engine up to position it to get it to fit back in, but you would have already realized that from your other 3 mounts

And you do have to remove the x-member. 4 bolts + 1 bolt through mount. Plus, I think you have to take the shift control linkage off.

Well, the rear seems to carry most of the weight, and the front is also connected to the x-member, so if i dropped the x-member with no support, it would sit on the left / right mounts. I'd rather not risk breaking those.

Current ideas:
+Use 2 big jacks for the motor ( i only have one )
+Engine hoist
+a 2x4 hanging on the fenders with some chains bolted to the motor, lol. ( ghetto engine hoist )

You won't break them, trust me. I've had many motors held in the bay by a tranny jack and the trans. mount alone.

Just remove the crossmember as described above, replace the mount, and you're good to go. I personally feel it's the easiest mount to do.

When you put the xmember back, first put the mount in and secure it with the mount bolt. Then you simply use a jack and lift on the xmember itself until you have it lined up with the 4 xmember bolts.

That sounds about right then.

So i'm thinking.. jack up the motor with something ( stock jack should be okay since it's supporting ~200lb instead of 700+lb i suppose ) since most of the weight is there, drop the crossmember, switch out the rear mount, push up/adjust the entire assembly with my regular jack.. and done.

Just make sure you use a piece of flat wood on the jack to support it and you'll be fine, that's how we work a lot of motors at my buds garage, jacks and wood. heh. Good Luck

I just replaced my motor mounts. You just use a 2x4 and a floor Jack underneath the oil pan to support the weight of the engine while you replace the mount. Slowly raise the Jack until it slightly lifts the engine. Remove the crossmember and swap out the mount. Make sure to support the crossmember while you're removing it so it doesn't fall on you. Then you can carefully lower or raise the Jack to help line up the mount when you reinstall it

I did it the exact same way and had no troubles doing it. Just make sure you are careful lowering and raising the jack while aligning the mount

Thanks everyone for their advice. I've never DIY'd anything like this and was nervous, but now i've got the strength to go on

I just took off the crossmember, did the work, and put it back on. First time for me as well, no sweat. (After I did the first one that is!)

Hope it goes well!
