awesome, thanks! i guess most people say when you drop n1 cams in you don't really need to re-shim? think i will just pop my valve cover off anyway and check real quick with feeler gauges

mine sounded like rod knock a while back, it turned out to be bad spark plug wires. About the ticking, I beleive they all do

Wow.. that's nuts. How did you come to that conclusion? Just pulled plugs 1 by 1 and replaced as a guess? Bad spark plug wires, I would NEVER assume would be the cause of a sound, only problems with startup and/or idle. Good call on that, many others would have torn the motor apart when it was something dumb like a freaking $40 set of wires.

A quick way to check plug wires is to start the engine in a very dark place and look for electrical arcing between the wires.

...and on top of that, put some water in a squirt bottle and 'mist' it over the plug wires. My wife's car had an intermittent 'mis' that turned out to be bad plug wires...the only reason I stumbled upon it was because I pressure washed the engine bay and I could finally HEAR the 'ticking'.
