shaved vvl head de/ve swap question
The situation is i have a head that was shaved 1mm, or 40 thou, i've used the head on a regular sr20ve bottom half with n1 cams (12mm lift) and they clear with no contact, the motor ended up spinning main bearings, got a different block and crankshaft fresh rods and bearings it went down again, after a 1 year hiatus i'm back at it again. this time with an unmolested de bottom half (9.5:1 pistons) with the head the cylinder pressures are 255psi, i am running stock cams,

now i know the n1 cams wont clear, however i know sr16 cams would clear if the head wasn't shaved so i'm asking if anybody has had the experience of using a n1 head or shaved head with sr16 cams with de pistons, or just your general thoughts on the matter

Why not just get a thicker head gasket that makes up the difference in the material removed from the head.

Thicker head gasket = lose some power and may lower compression but less likely to blow out in the long run. But I think that's his best bet

What about maybe notch the pistons so the valves don't hit. Just see how much travel you would need so it would work. This is just my thinking

I'm using the vet gasket but that only accounts for 0.3mm of the material removed, does any one have any idea whats the depth in mm of the valve notches on stock vvl pistons?
Also is there a documented way on how to lock the cams on high lobe to check valve to piston clearance?

The truth is its my last move to pull the bottom half, I haven't had luck with built motors in the past, getting a fresh jdm ve or de has been the only way my motors have lasted so far, so i'm sticking with what works for me, I do have another head that'll make the sr16 cams work but I'm curious if i'll be giving up compression for head flow to land right back at the same power figure, meaning essentially it would wind up being just an educational experience rather than progress

You are using the Nissan OEM gasket? (Greg @ Gspec sells them) - I know the Cometic gasket is thinner, but I don't know what's thicker. If one exists, probably somewhere.

using the oem vet 1.2mm gasket, based on my research the stock asbestos composite vvl gasket is 1.2mm but when torqued compresses by as much as 0.3mm meaning the finished compressed thickness would be 0.9mm

Talk to bes. I know he had a sr16 piston with n1s and made no contact.
