Or maybe it is to evenly spread the oil from the squirters to a larger surface area in the cylinder head rather than just dump oil straight onto the camshaft on one spot. You can view holes right below the baffle to allow oil to fall off. Typically, this leads to a damaged or scored camshaft from lack of oil.

I highly doubt it is to prevent oil from coming out. Why would one run the engine for any extended period of time with the oil fill cap off?

Good idea, bad idea, I dunno. YMMV.
Ask Nissan why they did it.

Another reason why the cams can be damaged are from old, narrow, clogged spray bars. Enjoy.

On the RWD motors it is thought that Nissan put it on the exhaust cam of the S13 motor (valve cover on right) so oil would not splash up and get sucked into the T-fitting which actually makes sense, and then they just never bothered to move it to the other side for the S14 and S15 valve covers (left). I am not sure what the differences between the various FWD valve cover generations are, but maybe on the VE the engineers caught their negligence and put it on the correct side.

Assuming it is already on the correct side, I would say it may be anywhere between really useful and really useless, depending on how much oil the cams actually splash up. Though even if they do not splash much oil upwards, it may still be useful, since there is actually vacuum at the baffle opening, thus oil droplets may still get sucked in from underneath, which the plate could help prevent.

I took it off for weight reduction purposes.

Its part of the pcv system like Ben Fenner mentioned. Its positioned below the baffle entry. Just to help keep as little oil as possible from getting up in there.

This seems a reasonable concern. I wonder if there is any evidence to support or disprove it.

All in all, while in theory it should be beneficial, I doubt one will notice any difference after removing it, especially since entire generations of the SR had it on the wrong side.
The best way to test it would be to have a fancy catch can setup and seeing if the amount of oil deposit in the can increases significantly after removing it.

Do any of you increase the pores on the oil feed tubes to supply more oil to the cams? I guess you could always drill more holes or slots Into the baffle itself also.

I was JUST thinking that. If you really take a look at the pores on the tubes, they are kind of small. Smaller than you'd think. As for putting the thing back on I think I'm going to toss a coin (far far away from the open engine, haha) and if it's heads it goes back on. Ha.

putting more holes in the line or making them bigger may cause oil pressure drop...

That's a good point as well. It just worries me a tad bit, simply because I don't think Nissan designed them ever thinking we'd be taking the motors well past 8000RPM 10 years from then with the N1 cams/springs and all. For some reason I think the DE holes are bigger too, especially in the high port - could make sense with the 7500RPM fuel cut, because wasn't the VE fuel cut set at something like 7100?

Does anyone who has had or seen the oil tubes on the SR16VE remember if they were larger or the same? Hard to find pics of anything like that, especially a particular part on such a rare motor.
