Is this piece really needed?
This piece reminds me of the piece in the DE's but on the opposite cam. Pulled VC off to check on things and look for any signs of sludge improvement after switching from Mobil-1 synthetic to Valvoline synthetic (there was no difference, if you're wondering) and also clean out the oil tubes.

That the piece I'm referring to. It does connect in line to one of the oil tubes, but so did the DE one, which, if I remember correctly, was on the exhaust cam, 2 lobes to the right of the timing chain. I won't be putting everything back together until tomorrow afternoon when Autozone gets my new plugs in, so right now I can easily put it back.

Why take it off?

It annoys me, lol. I dunno. An OCD thing maybe. I'm nuts. I do have OCD.

I cleaned it up a bit and now its silver colored. Had sludge on it I guess.

I always took that piece off the DE's when I did cam swaps, well that and the chain guide. If someone can tell me why I need this piece I'll put it back on tomorrow.

Kinda seems like it's only there to ensure oil isn't flung out the oil filler hole if the cap was off, which it shouldn't be if the motor is running.

Yah, that thing has been a topic of many debates. I know for a while Miko insisted it was to stop oil from spewing out of the engine if you ran it with the oil filler cap off. However, that theory was always a bit dubious, since the majority of engines had the baffle on the exhaust cam (Miko insisted they were assembled wrong at some point). I always thought it was just another part of the PCV system, since right above it was the entry-way to the baffles in the valve cover. So I believe it is another baffle keeping oil down where it belongs. It moves around to the intake cam on the newer engines because the PCV port in the valve cover moves. I keep mine in, and I'm likely just as OCD about removing stuff as you are.

Where is your B13? Is it going to come out to Ohio this year or what?

B13 is at home in the garage. It came out to play about a week ago now that the weather is better. I'm sorry but it won't make it to Ohio unless someone else wants to "take" it. =P

That makes sense.

Get rid of the cam baffle. You don't need it. I've removed it on all of my engines, DE and VE's.

If any, it's a bad design. I noticed on several engines the cam lobes where the cam baffle sits over were scored due to oil starvation. The baffle has small holes for the oil to squirt through from the oil tube, but my theory is during hard acceleration and cornering the oil might miss the holes and won't make it to the lobes.

Like other have mentioned, the baffle was meant to keep oil from spraying out if someone was to happen to open the cap when the engine is running. The oil baffle should be right under the oil cap on the intake cam. If it's somewhere else, then it was installed wrong.
