SR16VE or SR20VE?? Motor swap help.
Hello everyone,

I have a 94 B13 coupe with GA16 motor and planning to swap for VE motor. I cannot decide which of the VE motors to swap for, SR16VE or the SR20VE? I am tuning the B13 for autocross and I have suspension and handling nearly complete. Please help with your opinions and suggestions, any pros and cons are welcomed to help me understand more of both motors.
Also, I live in Northern Cali and any input on smog and reregistration tips and info is greatly helpful.

TheSam: They both have nearly the same horse power stock, SR20VE (187HP) a hair more than SR16VE (175HP). Please define your opinion, is SR20VE more flexible for tuning than SR16VE? Parts available/exchangeable?

What parts of Northern California are in? I am sorta northern and just finished my sr20ve swap a month ago. I love the feeling of the VE paired with a Fidenza flywheel it revs quick which might be what you are looking for on the auto-x.

you'd only buy the sr16ve if it had the lsd gearbox still attached, and then you'd go buy a 20ve crank for it for some interesting compression ratio's.

Cams from the 16 are pretty boss in the 20.

For autocross, you would want the extra low-down grunt that the 2.0 will provide. Most auto-x courses are pretty tight and don't allow for a lot of high-revving opportunites. If you can get the 16VE for the same or similar price as the 20VE, get the 1.6 and drop an 86mm (2.0 L) crank in. Like @sss4me has mentioned, it will a give you nice high comp 2.0 (appx 13:1 comp ratio).

The only consideration for the HC 2.0 would be tuning. You would want to make sure you have a good, solid and reliable tune to handle the extra compression. Ideal fuel for this set-up would be 93-94 octane but many members have tuned a HC 2.0 on 91 octane. You will need to pull some timing though. The PR guys have been very successful with this set-up.

Thanks, I will do some homework and look into this set-up

Oh and also the swap will be NA powered. May or may not boost at a much later time.
