Thread: compression test help

hey guy i did a compression test days ago #1: 255, #2: 270,33: 260. #4: 270
now my friend told me this is to high for my ve all i change was the cams i have in sr16 cams but i know cams dont raise compression so i would like to know if something is wrong with my engine because the car still pulls very strong

guess it depends on the method (and mabe instrument) used

once they #s are close, then i wouldnt worry too much

#1 and 4 vary a bit, but you said your car runs fine so...

high numbers could be due to the gauge, user error, or carbon build up. I would re do the comp test with a different gauge. Make sure to follow the factory procedure or you will get incorrect readings. Usually if the test is done wrong the numbers will be low. You are really just looking for comparable numbers across all the cylinders. A leak down test will tell you more about how the engine is doing then a comp test.

^This. We tested three different gauges and they all had different numbers. I believe the numbers should be within 10% of each other. I wouldn't worry about anything.

I always use the same tester so i know what it reads. Battery voltage, starter strength and revolutions all can skew numbers.

I do as well. Last one decided to break after the high comp motor pinned the needle.

lol. Yeah expanding the flex bellows in a gauge kills them every time. I used to have engineers that would over range gauges and wonder why they did not read right. I stopped lending the gauges from the cal lab because of this.

Very normal for a healthy VE with regular SR16 cams.. I have seen stock VE yield 270psi on stock pistons before.. And yes regular SR16 cams raise the pressure on the cylinder and N1's lower it... a little bit...
