bend valves?? possibly?
Hi, people today was the last time in a while that my engine will be revved and abused. Today i was driving like always, stopped at a red light and on green i revved my engine in 1st gear till 8k then 2nd all the way spining tires until a curve, then just drived my car nicely nothing wrong, oil psi ok and everything ok, but after like 10 min i started hearing like a head noise, not that loud but i noticed that if i pressed a little harder the gas the noise was less and less, i thought maybe is that the oil tubes got blocked with oil or something, because my engine is dirty inside since i bought it. But when i started going up a hill the noise started again and suddenly i felt like a power loss but the engine was still on, and finally the engine shut off, nothing heard during the shut off. so i stopped. waited for a friend to pull my car to the garage and this is what i found...

2 bolts from the adj sprokets blow away and the other ones all loose, this was only on the intake side nothing happened on the exh side. I cant see the chain if i try to look, it must be all the way down. What i think happened and hopefully not causing any major damage to the engine.

- The bolts came loose causing the cam to reatard all the way, causing the power loss up hill and of course making the sproket to move like crazy wich caused the chain to jump an fall from the cams.
- And due to that i was driving at very low RPMS when the engine shutoff and like the intake cam got retarded all the way maybe any valves where hit, wich is my priority concern about this...

Anything is welcome!!
Thanks a lot like always!

Did you find the bolts that are missing?

If you are lucky you will need only intake valves but more than likely you will need at least a new head. When that happens, you can only pray that it runs ok with new valves. The only real way to find out is to pull it apart and see what you got but i don't want to get your hopes up

this is why i like the CS cam gears from Gspec.

Never seen those cam gears before? who makes them? I switched out my bolts for some flanged ones on my HK$ gear and never had a problem.

those are strong but aparently the bolts are weak will exchange all of them for other ones with better ones.

i have called a few friends here in PR that have been dealing with SR20 for years and all have the same concern, the valves, but all of them say that is less possible due to what i already explained but the only way to know 100% sure is by taking it out...

Thanks for the replies!

Probably didnt bend any valves due to the cam retard, retarding the intake cam only moves it further away from the pistons but during decel the cam would probably advance all the way which if you were in vvl that could be a problem. However the chain falling off is not good, if it didnt snap then it should be down under the gears resting on the divider between the guides. But once it fell up it probably locked the crank because it bundled up and probably could have possibly snapped and broken the chain, If you dont see it sitting over the divider below the cams then its snapped.

In that case you will need to take the head off, front cover, install a new chain, have the head checked at a machine shop for bent valves if you cant visually see any. Have it resurfaced and then throw it back on if all is good. Id ditch those cheap gears.

Exactly why i wont use any gears with bolts on SR's. Sorry, Just being inside the motor and all, i mean how often are you gonna check them. Not like timing belt motors where you can see them and check them easily. Just dont trust them, and I dont care if people have used them succesfully just still dont trust them and have a much better peace of mind with the CS adjustable gears.

Good luck man and hopefully the head is still undamaged.

^^^yep. imho, slide type are fine for dyno tuning only. once you find the best position for int/exh cams, switch them out for the CS gears.
good luck with what you find
