Yes i did, first time piston touched, second time A assembly issue B tune issue (possibly washed the bearing out). Jun made a mistake on assembly the first time and possibly the second time.

I usually get my overbore and hones done at a local machine shop and includes a final hot wash and cleaning after its finished and a resurfaced deck for about $180

So not bad.

very good info..thanks

The pistons and cylinders need to be measured and matched. The thing with reusing pistons is that they need to go back into the same hole they came from. Pistons will "wear" into a cylinder from heating and cooling from prolonged/ several miles of use.

The ideal option is new pistons. $240 for a set of new pistons from GregV is well worth the peace of mind and is also cheaper than a set of forged pistons. You do need to get a new set of rings.

The whole break-in process of an engine is the seating of the rings. Rings "grind" into the cylinder wall and become one off to that cylinder in that position. Anytime you even remove a piston from a block you should install new rings.

You can get away with a simple cylinder wall hone. Have the crank micro polished, and ideally balanced though balancing isn't necessary. Have the head checked for "true." I assume you wouldn't need to have the head vacuum tested since I don't think you've put that many miles on it and also it hadn't seen an overheat.

With a cylinder hone, crank polish, and wash of all the parts you should be out of the machinest for under $100.

I build engines day in and day out. Hunter Motorsports is my business and what I do for a living.

LukaMcCloud, pistons from Greg V are actually $350 4 pistons $260 + rings $90. When considering price as compared to the forged pistons which come with rings at $520.

Anyway.

I have done many a motor with used pistons and new pistons and I have not seen any abnormal wear with using used pistons. I have had a few motors go over 100,000 miles with used pistons and pulled down as the owner wanted to go in another direction and the engine looked like any other engine that came from the factory.

I am no engine building specialist just stating what I have seen,

Piston, SR16VE VVL, 11.6:1 or so (fits SR20DE), Piston from the VVL motor. Extremely high compression. Can be as high as 12:1 in a 2.0VVL motor. Some modification will be necessary in some applications. Call for info. **Priced Each.

$60 X 4 = $240

So your telling me you dont have to buy rings for $90 also bevause that price does not invlude rings, where the forged pistons come with rings. It must be me.....

I did not mention rings. I understand the fact that you would want to spend money on rings, there is zero argument there. I have no clue why you repeat it in response to quoting me.

You typed the price as $260, not $240. I cannot find stock SR16/SR20 pistons for another price besides $60 per piston from Greg V.

It is only a $20 difference, but it was a difference nonetheless and I was way more curious as to where the number came from, perhaps?

Maybe I am crazy, right?
