Thread: install new n1 pistons an rings without honing

would this be ok? i figure my block should be perfectly fine, what do you guys think?

Why not, if it's not scratched and the factory hone marks are showing. You won't know till you pull the head off. Don't forget to notch the piston side skirts for the oil sprayers.

my engine has less then 100k FOR SURE, an prolly very close to or under 75k and the compression is 230 exactly on all 4 cylinders with throttle open.. i really think it'll be in nice condition when i take the head off..

im tryin to decide weather i should go with the n1's or the cp 86mm ve pistons on ebay which would make me feel a bit better on the compression ratio thing but also i wouldn't have to shave them down to fit..

like i said i would really like to go bigger, but i think i should do that as a side project.. something i can get a short block an slowly build up.. that way i might be able to actually go 92mm

i would say just do a light hone on the block. the new rings will like that. you can buy a ball hone for about 80 bucks or less and do it yourself. or take it to a machine shop. it should be cheap. stay away from the 3 stone ones, ive never had very good luck when using those.

does your local spare shop not sell that honing tool? Look's like a 3 legged sander. It's cheap, attach it to a drill and just give each cylinder a very light/quick hone.

we have the 3 legged ones all over for pretty cheap, but i've always been told not to use them, not just by sr guys but by pretty much everyone.

maybe i'll pick up one of the ball style ones online, i've seen em for like 40 bux which is half the price then i can get them for locally

Cool good to know the 3 legged ones aren't good. Learn something new every day. I've always just sent mine to the shop to get done.

But yeah a light hone would be the best before your new rings.

Quick question while we're on the topic, what about the other way around?

i.e. can I re-use my CP pistons and rings once I've removed them from the block if I just hone the block? They've done about 2000miles total through 2 builds, in 2 different blocks. Or should I just go with new rings?

No honing here, running N1's since 07 no problems, like they said before notch the pistons to clear the squirters

quick question about notching the n1's (or 16ve's) what is the measurement of the hole??
