Just put a new bearing in and roll. Maybe I'm not being cautious enough?

The crank has similar scaring compared to the rod. It does not look bad but its not smooth and shiny. The slight scarring is nothing to worry about?

That has been a thought.

Caps came off pretty easily.

The crank

Why does that have to be the ghetto way? Many people do it that way including dealerships

Honestly I'm not sure if I would try it. The crank seems to be scored up pretty good. Its not as bad as my brothers car but we tried cleaning up the crank journal with emery. Installed a set of ACL bearings. All seemed well but 100 miles later the block grenaded and threw a rod. Not trying to scared you but I say tear it down and do a fresh rebuild. Few hundred bucks and your motor will be 100%!

Not sure where my head was. If there's scarring on the crank (rod doesn't really matter) then you're in trouble. I've heard it argued that a few radial grooves aren't a big deal but lateral scarring is the major problem. Either way, those pics really show the story. I think the crank journal is toast. You're dealing with a spun bearing. My thoughts were that the bearing hadn't spun. :o
Just a bearing replacement isn't going to cut it. =(

I didn't coin the term. Someone else did. The method is well known under that name, which is the reason I used it. You could argue it's not the best way to swap bearings. It sure is the easy way though.

Thats what i was thinking as the day went on. I am taking the crank out tonight and dropping it off at a local machine shop along with the #4 rod. I want them to check it out and see what they think. I might use the DE crank if its too far gone but i would rather just use over sized bearings on the one rod and be done.

I got the crank out last night. I need to pull the oil squirter and the rod/piston will be out. I didnt have a 12pt 10mm socket. Parts will be off to the machine shop on Wednesday to see what happens.

Question, what do i tell the machinist about what motor or car this is for. Are all the SR20s the same as far as the bearings go? I think so, according to Gspec, but i wanted to make sure.

Clearances are all the same I think. GTi-R rod bearings are wider, and their main bearings have extra oil holes. Otherwise SR20DE and SR20DETs are all the same. Right?

Oil squirter? You don't think you can take the piston out the bottom do you?
