Going to buy a VVL Soon. WHat to look for
This August I'm buying my new VVL engine.
Are there different kinds of VVL's? I understand there are newer and older VVLs out there - I would like to get the newest one possible. How can I be sure of this?

pop the valve cover if you can, other then that if its clean good luck, its always a crap shot in the dark.

but if it blows 16ve pistons !

by the way ve's are getting cheaper and cheaper.

Man just go with an avenir. I had my VVL and it got old quick. You have to spend way too much money to make power. Talk to Chris... We had this talk a day or 2 ago.

The newer ones are the 20V. They are less common and more expensive but can be found. The differences are in the FAQs. I think they are from 2001/2002 but I'm blanking on the exact production dates.

I know... But the fact is I'm not looking to make crazy power. In all seriousness, I was very happy with my DE with just S4’s and all the bolt-ons. I just want my car to run again and have NA reliability. For a few $100 more I can have a little more power with the VVL . I already have a brand new set of N1 cams, BC valve springs so I can rev up to 9k! I also have a SR16 water pump and intake manifold and full gasket set. I plan to rebuild this engine to like new – with a little extra thrown in.

If original with the motor and a tricky seller doesnt change it, check for the water outlet on the left side of the engine (not where the thermostat goes). It will have a circle with the month and year stamped, like 5/99 or 9/00, etc.

They say that the older VEs were better with less irregular intake manifolds, so if you are interested in that look for a 97 or 98.

Any japanese engine that is not 10 years old yet might be more expensive.

And you cant use your N1s with the SR20VE 20V I believe? Not sure on that one, but I do believe you cannot use the BC valve springs, so look for an older cheaper VE, check under the valve cover and use that water pump to freshen it up, perhaps a new chain tensioner and a new oil pump if you wanna be careful.

Yup, already have the new water pump. Oil pump and chain tensioner are a good idea!
