Thread: VE+B15 Tranny problems

so the problem here is really about the tranny but since its attached to my VE i thought i would post it here . anyway....

so about a month ago i noticed my tranny leaking my tranny fluid from the driver side axle. eventually it started to leave a mess in my engine bay. so i finally decided to remove the axle and replace the seal. i took a pic of the axle before i replaced the seal just for reference. here is what it looked like....



so when i take the seal out i thought i might find it all torn up but it looked as new as it did when i replaced it about 1 month or 2 ago because i tore the old when installed my VE. so here is what it looked like after i replaced the seal anyway and installed a new axle since just incase...


now when comparing the pictures i clearly notice the axle was not in all the way in the first two pictures. so i thought "so that was the f'ing problem". so as happy as i could possibly that i solved the problem i drive off to my girlfriends house 6 miles away. i pop the hood open just to make sure all was well and BAM there is a mess in my engine bay again and my axle is in the same position it was in the first couple of pics i posted. there is about a quarter inch gap between the tranny and the axle and yes, the seal is perfectly flush with the tranny, i made sure of it. i also made sure i got the right axle about 10 times now and its the correct axle.

so my question to you my SR20 brethren is "how far does your axle go in?" . am i doing something completely wrong or is my tranny a B I T C H and not want to take my axle in all the way.

i found a thread on the old forum of the similar 1/4 gap problem but no solution.

Just took a pic of mine looks like the same amount of gap.

thanks andy for the picture reference. so now that i know it is in as far as its suppose to go, what could be the reason my tranny keeps deciding to reject my axle? im gonna go drive the car HARD which is usually how i test things and see if it does it again.

psgr axle on a b15 is different sizes for auto or manual, if that helps at all. Just an observation I had when I was installing a new DE into my b15.

O.k. and the axle you are putting in, is the input shaft of the axles you are installing are they about 7 inches atleast or is it shorter.? lsd axle or non lsd? the tranny in the car that was in previous was it lsd or non?

the axle i am putting it in now is an lsd axle for a lsd for a b13 which should "work" on my b15 tranny. i dont know how long the input shaft is but it was the exact same as the old axle and the old axle was exactly the same as the axle before that lol.

Do you have the C clip on the axle? Thats a weird issue man.

where did you get the axle? is it a cheapy auto store one? or is it a remanned oem unit??

i HATE crappy auto store knock off axles..

It's a remanded one. And it does have the c clip on the end of it. I drove to my girls house again and when i got there sure enough it was out again. So I forced it back in and it seemed to go in a little further than before. This is some weird ass shizzle.

This will make getting the axle in and out harder, but, next time you have the axle out spread the ring open a little more. This will make it harder to deal with but it will prevent it from riding out also. Pay attention to the gap when you take it out and just open it slightly more than what it is now.
