I'd suggest asking for compression numbers whenever you buy from an engine shop. Also with VE's the year of manufacture will be important. Yeah, I want to know the same thing. What makes the 97-98 VE's better than the later ones?

i wanna know also since mines a 11/97 motor, it runs like a beast.. what makes it better?

If I can recall Snickers (Charles) mentioned that the head castings for the 97-98 motors were much better than later years. Shrouding of ports were smoother and resulted in better flow. Later castings by Nissan supposedly did not have as good quality control and it affected flow rates. Mike Kojima made note of this when he was trying to make big power with his VE and found out he had a late 98-99 motor. It's in the archives, not sure where.

Late 97 was the cut off date. Its early 96 late 97 motors.

So if purchasing a motor from Soko, how would I know when it was built? Stamp on the block? VIN number?

Date is on the water neck on the front of the motor.
