if you have trouble with the axle def go out the bottom. i always go out the bottom as well but i have access to a lift.

I recently did the same thing as you, and I would suggest not even using the leveler. That might sound crazy, but in order to get it out of the top easiest it needs to be crooked.

To do this I attached the lift to the left side of the intake manifold, and to the exhaust header on the opposite side but to the outer right primary.

This will cause the motor to come out crooked with the tranny side down. This allows everything including axles to clear.

It isn't a bad idea to rip off the alternator and power steering etc, makes it even less of a hassle. Can be done with one person, but much easier with a second to help level it off after it is above the bay.

I have now gone out the top a bunch, and out the bottom a few times. On paper the bottom sounds tempting but its sucks every time I have to do it maybe it's just my luck.

Last time I almost crushed my WS2 because the front was up so high the muffler was getting crushed.

Gl!

And yes, it is in the garage, half in and half out. Not worried about the windshield, gonna part it out then junk the shell.... Mike

I got a huge flat head screw driver for that. If you are going to leave the axels in then lower the engine on to blocks and lift the car over the the engine with the lift. This works great if you are trashing the shell that the motor is comming out of.

The other swap I just finished, I put the hoist to the side (to lift up the car) and it was even easier:

question, when u lifted the car with the lift where did u hook up the chain???

Out the top is not hard with a leveler. I pull out and drop in the top with the trans connected and driver axle in the trans.

I do that the same way with my datsun b110 when I put my sr in. I bolt the motor up to the crossmember and lift the car over the motor then lift the motor up so the crossmember meets the car.
Except my stripped out b110 is so light (its just the shell with back axle in) that i just lift up the front with one hand thru each headlight bucket and walk it round like a wheel barrow!

I used a thick tow strap connected to the side engine/tranny mount locations and connected the hoist to that.

Yeah, you don't have to go as high if you use cardboard or something instead of the dolly. He also used blocks to keep his jackstands functional which is a nice touch for safety.

I should probably note, I don't get under the car at all when I do that.

i was gonna do mine from the bottom but didnt have enough clearance inside my garage ,plus the balls to lift it that high...it just doesnt feel right! i did mine from the top and it was super easy. just make sure you kinda grab it lopsided so it will be easy to maneuver inside the engine bay

I'll say it again I duno how you guys do it from the top it's just way too much time. I just lower mine to the ground the jack up the car with two jacks enough to slide it from under it with the xmember still attached to the motor and trans.
