Thread: Is there any documentation showing when VVL was invented?

I am curious when VVL actually was invented if that is what you would call it. I can't seem to really find any history on it. Other than the fact that it seems the first production of it was probably in 1996.

Oh no. It was most certainly invented.

I think variable valve lift was invented before VTEC (the first variable valve lift and timing design) but I could be wrong.

Yeah fiat motorpsort (Ferrari) used them on their F1 cars for a while in conjunction with their turbo engines. The idea was to gain a better powerband up high whilst maintaining a good midrange power for their V8 turbo engines. If you listen to some old 70's f1 cars you can hear the great note changes.

VVT = VVL? I was more so curious when nissans VVL came about compared to Hondas VTEC. I think there are a few others out there asking this same question.

vvt is variable valve timing an vvl is variable valve lift.. so not only do they have variable lift but also variable timing lol.. however im not sure when it actually came into production, i believe honda was like 89?
