Thread: Safe max rev on SRXXVE cams

8000 or so.. But it isn't just that i want it to rev safely to 8000, i want to continue making power beyond 7000... I thought i read some of the SR20VEs have weaker springs that will cause valve float and a loss of power... And you only know you will have this issue after you install cams and dyno the car, and see no power beyond 7200 or something....

Is that only the case with certain cams? Do the N1 cams work just as good with both the "weak" and "strong" springs? While other cams need the strong springs??

I just don't want to do my cam install twice..

your confusing the valve float issue with the use of stock sr20ve cams. Not the n1 cams.

Some have come across depending on the year of the motor, 2 different sets of springs. Either way they are close to each other. Stock VE cams will begin to float the valves after about 7200 on one set and about 7700 on another set.

N1 cams you dont have to worry about what set you have, it will hold power well past 8000 even on a basic setup. It will peak around 7600 or so but hold close to peak power to 8500 or so. Doesnt matter what spring set your motor came with in this instance. Ive yet to see a ve that didnt act the same way.

OK, finally i feel clear on the subject.. Depending on how finishing up my VE install goes this weekend, we may drop the N1 cams in too then.

Drop them n1 in youll have that smile in ya face when the vvl pops and it keeps pushing til 9k without valve float.

From what I've read the stock VE cams have a more aggressive ramp angle than the N1 cams which contributes to the valve float at the designated RPMs with stock springs. I road race my 91 SE-R at 8.2K RPM with N1s and stock springs all out up to 8 20 minute sessions on a race weekend and not a hiccup. Power holds, pulls hard. Just do it.

what is safe limit for 20v cams w/ 20v head (stock springs and retainers)?

^^ thank u sir. good info there (seat pressures etc) but no datapoints for 20v cam + 20v head. I guess i'll assume stock rev limit. Say, what is the stock rev limit?

SR20VE 20V factory redline is 7800 rpm.
