If you want to get into this realize that there is a learning curve with manually changing maps on the stock ECU, but also realize it makes no sense NOT to buy the realtime unit. Now, if you are going extreme with setups, standalone is still best bet. Standalones add inputs and outputs and use wideband O2 for tuning and adjusting. Outputs trigger all sorts of devices and inputs read sensors or switches to adjust fueling or set warning lights or buzzers and all sorts of stuff. The stock ECU doesn't do that, so a daughterboard on the stock ECU can't do it. You can however read Consult port on the Calum board!

Since I haven't dealt with the ECU's and changing the maps, and dont have a consult, I don't think I would be designing any maps.

I just need something that could take advantage of the bolt ons that I have, advance/retard ecu, and control the A/F ratio so that it still would get good gas mileage.

If the basic can do that with the default programing, then I'm all for it

You will get the basic tune, which is pretty much what is in my car with some changes over the last 2-3 years. good base tune.

remember with your 99 you are going to be rewiring your harness no matter what to convert to the pre 98 ecu's...

The stock ECU does this.

The advantage the Calum ECU gives is the ability to change the stock maps/upload new maps and fine tune your ECU to the extent that billc is doing right now.

To be honest I think the stock ECU will do a good enough job with bolt ons. If you do buy the Realtime, resale value is excellent and if you DO go turbo... hey, then the engine management on your turbo check list has just been crossed off.

I suggest you read billc's post, it's a lot in line with what you're trying to do and it might help you make a decision.

Keep in mind that you can only do what billc is doing with Nissan Data Scan. Like others have said I wouldn't even consider a non-realtime ECU. Nissan Data Scan is simply awesome... I haven't used the map trace feature on it yet but being able to click a button and turn off your fuel pump or put the car into timing mode is just sick.

actualy....what billc is doing is on a basic board and he is having to burn chips and swap them out. if he had a real time it would be quicker. you dont have to have it to tune, but man it is easy

****, I didn't realize that... must be a pain in the ass, haha. Let me edit that..

I've seen that thread, but yet to make full sense of the information provided...

Hmm so I will need a new ecu

So basically the JWT comes with a specific tune that helps it achieve the ~5hp extra. I've just heard some pretty good things about the JWT ECU and how it helped live up the car.

Now before buying a JWT I would def get a Realtime, but that is still a bit too much.

It's exactly how you would go about improving your gas mileage if you were to buy a Calum ECU and tune the maps. If you're looking to understand exactly how it works, download TunerPro and download the b14 .xdf file Calum has on the old forum in his section and find a random b14 .bin and just mess around with it. Open up the timing and fuel maps and see what billc is talking about. It might help you understand.

As for the JWT ECU, yes that's exactly what it is, just an improved tune of the stock ECU's maps. Hence, reflashed ECU. Basically Calum's Realtime ECU's have the ability to infinitely "reflash" the ECU whenever you want with whatever tune you want. Also, JWT's ECU's have a slightly conservative tune, with the Calum you can tune to exactly the AFR you're looking for (of course you'd need a wideband to help you do that) which would bring out even more HP/mileage. I hope this helps, if you have any specific questions I'm sure we could help you out even more.

JWT ECU = you send in your stock ECU and they burn their program (.bin file) onto the ROM for a cool $600 not including core refund.. reprogramming costs $100 for each time

Calum ECU = you send in your stock ECU to Calum and he does his USB thing and sends it back to you for much cheaper... now you can burn whatever .bin you want onto your ECU.. as many times as you want, with no cost to reprogram it except the electricity for your laptop.
