Alternative Knock Sensing solutions
Hi guys,

Is there any alternative/aftermarket/standalone knock sensor kits available that work on our cars?

I'm running a full EMS and it doesn't have knock sensing, but I'd still like to monitor this somehow.

Any old stand-alone knock sensing kit should do it. There are a good many to choose from. I haven't done much research but you should be able to find options out there. Does your EMS have an input for this so you can log it at the same time?

Cool. Will look into it a bit more. Most of the ones I've seen on a quick search only measure for knock at 2 set rpm ranges, both of which are usually low (<6k rpm)

Really just looking for something that maybe lights up a light on the dash while tuning. High rpm is off course the main concern, and with all motor vvl screamers it sometimes hard to hear knock.

High RPM has too much engine noise, thus it's hard for the knock sensor to pick up on it. OEM knock sensor stops reading at around 4500-4800 rpm. Before that it's pretty dead on accurate.

Your best bet is to watch the plugs and torque drop off.

Could you explain a bit more how to interpret the torque drop off?

Or are you looking for an electric solution? That you can log?

My EMS doesn't cater for knock sensing. So I can't log it.

That link you posted is quite ghetto but looks like it could work well. Might give it a shot. Thanks.

You know my motto, ghetto gets the job done.

Just tune it on a dyno and keep a close eye on your exhaust gases! You'll see when it starts to knock and know that you will have to set back your ignition a few degrees!
