disconnected knock sensor
Well I'm just wondering wouldn't a disconnected knock sensor cause timing to be pulled. Stock ecu 17* base timing and at open throttle timing is about 30 which should be normal. But just noticed sensor plug is damaged and not connected. Any imput?

No it wont pull timing with it unplugged. The way the sensor works is off of the vibration/noise from detonation and puts out voltage when those frequencies are hit, voltage is sent from the knock sensor to the ecu not the other way around. If the ecu never sees any knock voltage it will not pull any timing.

Therefore disconnecting the sensor will have zero affect on timing other than it wont pull any timing out if you do have detonation. Pretty simple stuff.

Yeah I agree that it wouldn't pull timing at WOT since I don't believe that the ecu reads the knock sensor above a certain rpm. Either way at WOT you would be in open loop anyway so it would run off a set table based on maf voltage.

Yup, the the ECU stops using the Knock sensor at 4800 rpm or so. Also if knock sensor is not in place, it should just go to use the timing map.

wouldnt the ecu throw a code because it doesnt see the knock sensor? It may pull timing because it cant tell if there is knock or not. Wouldn't the ecu programming be to run on the knock timing maps if the knock sensor has a fault?

It will throw a CEL, it might actually go into limp mode. I would try it though, you can disable the knock sensor within the tune, so that lends me to believe that you don't have to have one.

Also there is no knock maps, it's more of a regular map with knock reading enabled on it for specific cells.

in obdII vehicles you will get a code. All it does it check the knock for continuity and if it doesnt sense its there it will throw a code. Obd1 vehicles. Nope, you can unplug it and run without it without any affect on the motor at all other than it will not take timing away if knock occurs as it would with it connected.

How accurate is the knock sensor on our motors sr's?

I have a s13 sr20!

For your tuning do you use a aftermarket knock sensor or light?
