the best 'basic' board that i know of is the PLMS Development board which you can run up to 4 different maps on and switch them on-the-fly while driving/running. Costs a bit more but handy sometimes.
Calum's basic boards have ZIF sockets, where the Moates boards use regular plug-in sockets. However the Moates board allows the use of two Moates Ostriches for real-time tuning. The Moates Ostrich connectors will not plug into the ZIF sockets on the Calum board. So, if you think you might upgrade to real-time tuning, get the Moates, if not, the ZIF sockets on the Calum board make chip changes easier.
On the moates board do you connect that little red jumper or leave it off.
