Real Time ECU Tuning Questions
Well I finally got around to getting an older ECU, and just sent it in to get the Real Time program :-).

So while I'm waiting for the ECU to come in I've been playing with TunerRT and do have some questions about the functionality of the ECU it self.

The Real Time ECU self learns right?
Is it possible to save what the Self learned values to a bin file?

There isn't anything different between the RT ecu and a normal ecu. What makes the 'RT' ecu 'RT' is because it has an emulator built in to the daughterboard. So if you load a stock bin on it, its just a stock ecu. So yea, if your using a stock bin it will self-learn just like normally. You can monitor the self-learning via the alpha feedback values. Check out the EC section of the '95-97 FSM.

You don't 'save something to a bin file', thats like saying on a windows PC your saving something to an 'exe' file. The 'bin' file is the program the ecu is actually executing.

So your saying that non-Stock bins don't always self learn?

What I meant by saving onto bin file is, after the ECU has self learned all the values and all the new mods, can I hook up the computer to the RT ecu and export that BIN file with all the new values?

They might not, it depends. A 'bin' is literally the program the ecu runs. You can disassemble the program, change it, recompile, and how it operated will be different. So theoretically you could alter the program and turn off the self-learning.

The bin resides in the ecu ROM area, hence why the daughterboard has an emulator. So the ecu doesn't change the bin.

Can you monitor the self-learning? Yes, via the consult connection. See the EC section of the fsm. Its really good reading- it describes exactly how the ecu operates.

Very interesting there!

I don't care about self learning, in fact I like it, but I want to be able to control it and or when I reset the ECU being able to get back to the best stage of the ECU. So that I wouldn't have to wait a week for it to relearn everything hehe.

I guess that is the point of preprograming the Cams and pop charger?

Consult sounds pretty good, I'll be getting that too :-)

The RT provides the consult connection. When you plug the USB cable into the PC you get two new virtual com ports- one is a standard consult connection and the other is to the emulator. Protocols for both are open, so there is a variety of software for either, or you could write your own.

Ideally the self-learning is 0. If the self-learning is actually doing something, your tune is off.

Ahh Well that makes sense too.

I'll keep that in mind when I work with the ECU

so basically since its a bin file thats not locked... i can add boost by gear function and a two step function to the program? interesting.

also does calum still use the maf or is there a bin file that has a map funcition to were you can add a map sensor to your vehicle?
