Whoever laid out the roads in GA from Atlanta north must have been drunk, because there is not a straight road anywhere. Even the roads in the city aren't straight. Plus you have all the mountains of North Ga and Tenn.

I think Atlanta's biggest problem as you can probably see is traffic. I'd figure out if you want to live inside of the 285 loop, or outside, then determine where traffic isn't so bad to narrow down specific parts to live in.

Living inside of 285 is cool, but unless you've got a lot of money, don't expect to find a place with a garage for a reasonable amount of money. I'm sure its do-able, but expect the area to not be so great. If you don't care about having a garage or nice parking, I'd personally get a loft downtown. There are some pretty swank warehouses converted to lofts. Depending on what and where you'll be working, your commute could be less living closer to down town and living inside of 285.

For me, I didn't want to deal without having a garage, or having to worry about accidentally leaving shit outside and having it stolen. Cost of living goes down quite a bit as you move outside of 285. I live in a pretty nice neighborhood in Marietta, and I could leave all of my bikes sitting in my driveway with the keys in them and I'm confident no one would touch them. The downside is commute downtown is a bit longer. But if you don't go much further north up 75 then Marietta, the commute is pretty good compared to other places. Of course my opinion is probably a bit biased

FYI, don't forget places like Huntsville, AL or Nashville, TN. Nashville probably has better school systems while Huntsville is a very family friendly town. Huntsville is also an engineer town and has a lot of federal money coming through it from NASA to MDA.

^Jobs are decent, but on the rise. The main 4 companies in this area are TVA, epb, UNUM, and the 'new' VW plant. The fiber optic network is in the process of changing this community. We landed a deal with Amazon and they are building two plants here. We've brought in about 5,000+ jobs already in the past 2 years. #'s will continue to rise.

Nashville's school system isn't really that great. There are some good school systems in the surrounding counties though - Williamson County schools (Franklin, Brentwood area) and there are some good schools in Rutherford County as well (parts of Smyrna and Murfreesboro areas). Basically, almost all of the really well known Nashville schools are private schools and big $$$.

I'm with Reese though - I think Chattanooga is a city on the rise. It puts you a little closer to the mountains of east TN too(and roads like the Dragon, Cherohala Skyway, and the Blue Ridge Parkway).

I've lived in Savannah before, pretty nice. Traffic wasn't so bad, but there were some days. Rent for a decent 1 bed with a living room, kitchen, and big storage room was $575. I'm in Jonesboro (Right outside of Atl) now, and I've hated it since I got here. Traffic sucks pretty much anywhere close to Atl, and Lawrenceville. I lived in Marietta for a while. Nicer place to live, but traffic is still bad there. I'd say go to Savannah man. Still pretty big, just not as busy. A little more country I guess.

I live in Gwinnett County.. I like to be where the danger is at!! I know the area where Joe(happynole) and Stephen (Crim) live. They are way safer, less traffic, cheaper cost of living.
