Well, I guess I'll be "inheriting" the SE-L for somewhere around scrap price. My brother-in-law (stepson's uncle) bought him a 2011 Chevy Aveo today. Hmmm... wonder if anyone will buy me a new car if I go out driving at 2 in the morning and wreck my junk...

As far as your question regarding sensors, I don't believe so.

I "THINK" how the SRS/Airbag system works is this: The triggers in the front/side (if equipped) and rear send the signal to the airbag control unit (brain), which triggers the airbag system.

I know that this is how it works on newer vehicles. The "sensors" are nothing more than triggers. Unless they are actually damaged, you shouldn't need to replace them. Just use caution when installing new airbags.

That's pretty much what I was thinking, but I don't always think right... I guess I'll probably just have the battery unhooked before I plug in the bags, along with hitting the brakes a few times to discharge the electrical system. I'll hook up the bags and reconnect the battery before I bother with patching the dash or replacing the windshield, so if they pop when I hook up the battery, at least it won't break new stuff.

i thought that when airbags deployed...all the triggers & units needed to be replaced...not only the bags

You should definitely check the sensors to see if they reset themselves. FSM any help?

Tonight I got the title signed over from my stepson and paid him for the car. I also got the spindle loose from the strut, removed the strut, and got the axle free from the spindle. I already ordered and received a new LCA, sway bar link, and upper strut mount from Rock Auto, so this weekend I'll probably get further into getting it rolling again. The axle was twisted at some pretty acute angles in the CV joints, so I think the joints probably pulled apart. I'm going to pull off the boots and see if I can put it back together or if it's busted to hell. If it's busted, then obviously a new axle is in order... shame, because that WAS a fairly new axle. I also took a pair of scissors to the airbags to cut them out of the way. Even after this wreck (which is at least the second major wreck the car has been in), it's amazing how solid the darn thing is! the doors shut perfectly, the seats feel great, and the engine runs like a top!
