Don't listen to Rob. He's only driven off Long Island 3 times in his life.

Back around 94, I drove my SE-R for over a year with no 5th gear, including a trip from NY to Georgia, Disney, North Carolina and back. The engine can take it no problem.

im dealing with it right now. 5th gear went out. its cold. i feel no need to be cold while doing a tranny swap. 4th gear keeps me from getting tickets. so, all is good. highway does suck, but its not that bad.

I drove my Classic for over a year with pop-out. Down to San Antonio and back at least once in that timeframe, 380 miles round trip. No issues whatsover. I flat-out could not afford to fix it, everything else worked fine, and I never saw any ill effects from only utilizing the first four gears.

Gas mileage I suppose? I never paid any attention to it. I still don't.

Drive it. Fix it later when you get the financial opportunity. Obviously take your time and find a really good deal on your choice out your multiple options. From pretty damn cheap rebuilt or other wise excellent conditioin B13 unit, through a B14 which had a minor, half-assed OEM "bandaid fix" over the B13 unit (YES, a B14 can still develop popout), to my favorite yet a bit pricey option, which is a B15/P11 tranny.

And didn't Miko figure out how to get a Spec V six speed tranny to work? I *think* we have a How To/Technical Library thread either on this forum or on the other SR20 oriented forum. I'm guessing that would be a bit expensive as well. Relatively speaking.

Uh...then there's a Par tranny. But only if you are one damned $$$erious, no bullsh*t, racer of some sort.

5th gear on my '93 se-r started popping out infrequently around 156k miles.
7 months and 7k miles later it started popping out all the time above 55 or so and under load. I was able to anticipate when it was going to pop out under load, and hold it in, for another year until it would pop out all the time.
I lived with pop out for 2 yrs 3 months and 24,300 miles before I got really sick of it and put a low mile b14 transmission in.
When the original 181k trans was removed, the input shaft bearing was bad, causing a bad vibration, which probably contributed to wearing 5th gear out.

Thanks for the info guys. Like i said it would be for a relatively short time. 6 weeks probaly. Im in the same boat as you Shawn..low on funds. Everything went wrong around here at once and i have to pay tuition and books last week for this semester. Ive laid out 5k in the last 2 weeks. Im busted right now..lol. Thats why my dd has to sit ahwile too. Gotta get the cash. Again thanks for the input. You know me Shawn i did plenty of searchng and i think a good b13 trans is all ill need. I have a extra one but i dont want to put it in and a year later it starts pop out. Im going to have my spare rebuilt with a nismo lsd i think..put the courtesy kit in and make plans for the future ve maybe by the end of this year...we will see.

luckily mine is not a daily driver but I had pop out issues since i got the car about 5 years ago. I only take it on about 6 or 7 trips out of town a year so it is a pain for those trips but overall I never notice it.

i drove my old 91'se-r with the popout for about a year.i just held it in gear till it got so bad it wouldnt even take fitfh anymore. So i took it to a tranny place got it rebuilt(wasn't on the forum @ the time) 1200 bucks later it was ok ..then guess what as soon as the tranny shop warranty expired about a week later the damn shyt started popping out. I was so pissed the following week that i went out n traded it in for a 98' max. I regret 2 this day trading that car in ...

My parents B13 was driven around with four gears for 3 years.
It will work just fine except your top speed will only be about 105-110.
