SCCA Car class questions
I recently acquired a 91' NX2000 shell from a friend. I also got an awesome deal on some Wilwood front brakes and Maxima rears from a different friend. Reading through the rules my brakes alone put me into the Street Modified class. I was originally going to drop a VE in the shell but the total cost of the swap was scaring me away so I was considering picking up an Avenir for much cheaper. Again reading through the rules I saw that the addition of the Turbo would add an additional 1.4L to my total displacement. Basically my question comes down to this, would a Turbo NX be competitive against other 3.4L or Turbo cars in the Street Modified class? Would I be better off with a VE in the long run?

This class is for autocross right? If you go in street mod you are going up against some serious competition. WRX's with some 9"-10" wheels with Hoosiers to match. very tough to beat. I recommend SM or EP, these classes give you some room for modifications. CSP is an option too.
I have not kept up with all the class changes. I maybe wrong.
Good luck.

Solo Autocross and Road Racing. Forgive my ignorance but isn't SM = Street Modified? I couldn't for the life of me find what EP or CSP where.......Either way you helped a great deal. I looked again and saw Street Touring (STX) allows larger brakes and alot of suspension modifications but a stock engine. Because I already have the brakes and don't have the engine I figure I will go with this one and should be a little more competitive. Plus I really like the R&D aspect of suspension work and tuning so this fits well with me. What width wheels and tires do you run? I was thinking 15"x7.5" rims with 225s but I wasn't sure if that would end up if the increased drag on the engine would be greater then the added handling and traction. I may pick your brain a little bit at the convention if I see you there.

There has been quiet a few changes to the classes and classifications. Check out these links.
The thread I started in this section in regards to STU for road race. Check out the rules there and let me know what you think.

Hey, thanks for the fast response! Woof, reading through the rules I am definitely a newbie. I think starting out in the STX and working my way up to the STU class is the way too go. Unfortunately, with STU you are facing off against Evos and STIs. No wheel restrictions and no tire wear ratings is huge like you told me earlier! So you race in that class and are still competitive?

Do you think the judges would have a problem with a JDM highport in my 91 NX? It is a Japanese built car......

This year is the first year for the class. The Evos and STIs are limited to 250hp anymore and they will be in STO for circuit racing. I should be competitive, we will find out.

The only visible way of telling a jap spec motor is the missing EGR valve on the intake. It depends on the knowledge of your competitor and what they know about SR-20s. Go have fun the .5 in comp is neg.
