Awesome diy, thanks for the link Vadim. I have been wanting an electronic mic for diagnostic purposes and this is a much cheaper alternative to buying one from a major tool supplier.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Why spend $300+ on a one, all you need is just something to tunnel the engine sounds into your cabin. Even the old school phone would work...

Much easier job. Take a classic knock sensor and wire it to tah auxiliary input of your car stereo. We have done that on a friends ride and its working great.

Then that's as good as using the knock counter in TunerCode. My main concern is knock above 4800 rpm where the stock knock sensor doesn't work too well due to other engine noise.

x2 very interested in this. I've heard of using ear muffs with a tube bolted to the engine block but never wiring into aux

I'll have to try this. Only problem I see is having the string not touch anything and keeping tension on it. I'll report back with the results.

it works because the knock sensor when sensing any type of noise frequency in its range will put off a voltage. Thats the way it works. It requires no signal feed or any of that to work. If it hits a noise in the range its looking for it puts out a voltage. Wired into the aux you will hear the noise through the speakers in your stereo. It should work as long as the headunit will handle the voltage ranges if you get a heavier knock.

But brilliant idea though. Anything that can transfer a voltage signal into noise.

Bumping this up.

Member @squirlz posted a link to a very good non-electric DIY knock detecting stethoscope in this thread.

@Vadim, @BenFenner, maybe this thread could be changed to an all encompassing DIY stethoscope thread where various types of scopes could be linked in this one thread (since it is already in the Manifesto) or maybe the thread I linked by member squirlz could be added to the Manifesto along side Vadim's thread?
