My b13 Hi Fi install, and a question or two
Last weekend I got off my lazy ass and took my ED 6.5 subs out of my towers that I made for my living room and decided to get tricky and install them in the 13. So far my idea for a cool place to mount them doesnt sound too good, low volume and some nasty popping sound when the bass hits, I believe that the problem is too much air space ( I could be wrong??) I'm going to fill some of the space with spray foam and get buck wild with a bulk pack of sound deadener as soon as I find a good deal on some.

My super duper idea was to mount them in the sides of the rear compartment and seal the space as good as I could. I've read alot on the sr20 sites that people have good success with running them free air in the rer deck so I thought that this had the possibility of working nicely.

Heres what I have so far:

Drivers side

Passenger side

As you can see I made some mounting plates out of MDF, when I pulled the panel off I noticed there was a recessed spot in the metal and a matching piece of foam on the back of the panel. I simply removed the foam piece and traced it on the MDF, cut, sanded to finish the shape, used some sealer, then bolted them in place. The MDF is 1/2" BTW.

Like I said above the space is quite large and I'm really hoping that .
the bad sound issue is being caused by too much airspace. Currently I have the inside section lined with some 1/2" accoustical foam that I used spray adhesive to adhere it to the sides. The plan is to fill a large portion of the cavity with spray foam after lining the entire cavity with deadener, anyone have any thoughts on my air space theory?

If I can get these to work here and sound the way I want them to I already have a grill solution figured out and then I'll move on to the really hard part.

Making a set of 7" Dynaudio compnents fit in the doors

If my sub idea falls on its face I have a single 10" that I can fab up a fiberglass box for and stuff it in the corner of the trunk (had a lot of success with this method in the past)

If it all works out the system will consist of:
Eclipse HU
Arc audio 4ch and 2ch amps
Dynaudio components
ED subs

Wish me luck!!
Any and all advice and or ideas up to and including critisism will greatly appreciated. I have thick skin and can talk shit with the best of them so dont hold back please.

Oh, these ED subs fit in that space without removing any metal, very tight but they fit. So if all fails i can simply pop the panel back on and nothing has been lost. Also, the foil tape is just temp. I'll seal all of the gaping holes with deadener.

I also have a set of these, they are in my home towers curently. They sound better than the ED's do, but the ED's hit harder which I felt would good for the car. I tried them too and they sounded like ass as well, hence my too much air space idea????

Just my .02 but seems like it will rattle like crazy there.

I was afraid that might be the case as well, but so far no rattles. The deadener will only help with that as well. I really want to use this space if at all possible. I really like the idea of no box in the trunk and I honestly feel if I can fab it rght they will be very musical being in the cabin with me.

If those are true subs, there has to be WAY to much airspace back there. Do the specs call them a "free-air" sub? I doubt it, especially if they are that small.

Is the depth of the sub to great to make a small enclosure that goes back in there? If you could manage that, then you won't have to mess with sealing all of the nooks and crannies of the area back there.. and focus on just sound deadening. i would think turning that space into a "sealed" enclosure would be pretty tough..

I almost went that route and made a fiberglassencolure that would fit down in there but I would have to cut metal out no matter how I made it and that so far isnt an option for me.

If it comes down to that I'll just do the 10" in the trunk like I mentioned above.

have you tested the speakers off of your amp in the car while they aren't in their current position? that tape could be flapping a little with the pressure of the subs...

Yeah I did, tried a diff set of speakers in the same spot and they made almost the same ugly noise.

maybe your amp or head unit are screwed up or bad ground?? heck i dunno.. sounds weird.. i can't really understand what you mean by a popping sound on a sub especially..

Equipment is all in good working order, I brought the subs back in and re-installed them in the towers and they sounded as good as they always have.
