Audio help
Hey guys, I don't know much about audio. I have a question for you guys about a speaker. I have 2 alpine type r 6x9's. One sounds great, but the other one sounds like it has no bass. It's a SPR-694A 2 way speaker. 200w peak 50w rms. The speaker had a little "crossover" box where the 4 wires turn into two so you can hook it up. The little box broke, but the board inside looks good. Can I use the speaker without that, or is there any way I can test to see if that's why this one sounds bad? Sorry for the noob questions but I want my bumpin 6x9 back lol.

okay, so you think you screwed up the crossover? I think that's what I'm getting from it.

In that case, I don't think I'd risk it, but that's just my fear of blowing the speaker entirely.

What the crossover does, it sorts out the signal going to your woofer and tweeter, and If you send the wrong things to the wrong places, you'll have a problem.

Yea you would risk messing your tweeter. What you could do, is just hook up the two wires to the larger portion, or the midrange speaker. Leave the tweeter unplugged. Your larger midrange will be able to handle anything your stereo can throw at it so you would be fine. You probably wont even notice no tweeter unless you could compare it with/without.

Just try and get another crossover box, pretty sure any local audio store would have something to throw in there if you explain your situation.

Again, don't worry about hurting the midrange woofer, its able to handle an un-filtered signal, but technically it will sound a little "worse" because it will be trying to produce the higher ranges and ultra low ranges it cannot, but it wont hurt it.

Just take the two wires and match up the colors, or look for positive printed on the wires themselves. Remember red is positive, and black is neg....usually . Twist each wire together then cover em good with electrical tape so they wont cross or hit the tweeter wires. GL

Thanks guys, I looked around best buy and radio shack but couldn't find what I need. I'm going to check out the custom place tomorrow and see if they have one, and try to test the bass part of the speaker too just to make sure it works.

If your speaker is in deed a 2 way or 3 way speaker, you can use it without the cross-over. The whole purpose of having a cross-over, is so that you don't really have to run an amp to your door units. It's more of a bass blocker, than anything else. IIRC, most head units come with built in cross overs nowadays, so you really don't need it. All you need to do is just the audio out as non fading output to your amplifier. Then you can minimize the bass output to your door speakers.

Make sense? If not, let me know and I'll go a little more in depth.
