since the gti-r will be 25 years old next year.... thinking of trying to find one.
i know there werent a ton made. and im really just looking at it. my plan would be to sell my speed 3 and use the money to secure a gti-r. i know im crazy and have no idea where to begin trying this so i am looking to you guys for opinions/advice. hell you can call me dumb. im in california and dont wanna boost my 200sx because emissions suck, and i love my mazda but again emissions suck and i miss a boosted sr20. just wanted anyones opinions. are these things hard to work on? where can you find performance (sans ebay) parts. am i crazy? does anyone have one and wanna share? thanks folks

Parts are somewhat similar with the regular ol SR. Not entirely, but you can get by

Greg V is the man to go to for parts (be stock or performance)

The exhaust side is failry simply as the SR stuff bolts on. Wheels and brakes are swapabble. Suspension is mostly B13. Seats are pretty much B13. Head studs are different (and I think the flywheel bolts as well). The block is also narrower. Just do a bit of search. It will bring up everything you need to know.

However, my biggest fear with a 25+ year old Nissan is two decades worth of exposure to the elements and just the chassis being old overall. You would probably find a pristine one (I know of several overseas. Typically, the islands is where nice exmaples exists and you have easier access to), but it will take you some time to find one worth bringing over.

I would stay with the Speed 3 if I were in your shoes

yeah starting to look into it, and seeing as my cars are 99% daily drivers i may just have to give california the finger and play with the se-r lol.

Greg V will not be able to get you very main GTi-R specific parts. I had to find another source for the OEM crank pulley, OEM flywheel bolts (the thread pitch for these flywheel bolts is an un-common size). He directed me a few places and if you chose to pursue him, I am betting he would help you just as he helped me.

Finding parts for the engine, transmission and drivetrain are the hardest parts to find.

only b13 suspension that would work is the front struts, strut mounts, and that's about it.

If your looking for a toy this would be fun, but I wouldn't daily a car that old. As for parts the gtir engines are junk and a pita to get parts for, I've owned two. A ve or BB det will fit the gtir and parts are easy to get and cheap. I have been toying with the idea of getting one imported and doing a vet setup. My issue is I hate right hand drive cars. I would need a gtir from chile or a few places in eastern Europe to get a left hand drive car and they are super rare. The place I get engines from imports cars and can get me a right hand drive gtir but not a left hand drive, failure.

i've got a gtir up in vancouver, bc, canada, which i daily and luckily had no trouble with the gearbox/drivetrain items. Car runs strong and always puts a smile on my face.

i'd say the toughest thing to find would be axles, axle seals, windshield glass, rubber moldings, gearbox, rear diff, transfer case. you can source a lot of parts from ebay, the UK, and various forums. if you're intending to make some monster power, then u may want to consider looking for spare gearbox's. i've managed fine around the 300ish hp mark for 8years on 17psi on the stock turbo.

lots of parts interchange, just takes some homework.

car is fun, it stands out, everyone recognizes me in town which is sort of a curse. Body is getting old, and some rust cannot be avoided. luckily i have new rear fender metal that i sourced from the uk that i can have welded in.

in terms of performance driving, i've installed a modena torsen lsd up front, and a nismo 2 way rear. i autox, and occasionally use it for autox (mainly autox with a crx/ ef civic or miata o s2000), without the 2 way the car suffers from massive understeer.

all in all my car has been reliable. things that have needed replacement, cv boots (generic), alternator (2x use 90A from newer gen sr20de), exhaust (custom), coolant hoses (ebay silicone), clutch (off any sr20det), clutch master (unique), slave cylinder (unique), fuel lines, axle seals (axxess), tie rods (maxima), starter (internals same as g20), power steering pump (same as ga16de), steering rack (unique). regarding the steering rack, u could probably geta way with no power steering as it almost feels like it has none.

drivers (rhd) seat rail will not interchange. there is a hump for the transfer/cat/exhaust/ and the seat rail sits above it. i have a corbeau fx1 pro on sliders with side mounts and u end up actually sitting higher than the stock seat by an inch or so. if i had unlimited funds i'd use rectangular exhaust tubing around this area and cut out the hump. then i can weld the slider to the floor. taht would be my only gripe, and that the act xtss is a heavy son of a b. on the pedal. was planning on a big power bump, but have decided not to and likely selling my car next year for something newer.

if you got parts questions or nething related you can pm me.

U say the ve would fit... I hope u mean vet... Cause only the narrow sr20 block will work on the 4wd pulsars due to the transfer case....

All my ve cars are turbo but I can put any motor in any car so for reasons of confusion I'll go with ve. I would use the 6spd trans from the xtrail diesel due the gtir trans breaking easy. I had a gtir awd trans in one of my b14s and I had no issues bolting it to a few different sr engines. I love how ppl have to jump in with a that can't be done post. I make plenty of $ a year so if I want to put a gtr drive train in the gtir then I will. Enjoy
