A/C lines/cables?
So I'm not sure where to post this...so here sounds good.

I just got my a/c fixed...sort of. I was obviously low on freon, so they refilled it and got everything working. However, they found that the 'cables' that hook up the a/c unit were f'ed. Now, I know nothing about a/c except that cold air comes out and if not...it's not working. So, bare with me...

The guy said there are two cables, one is for the temp and one is for the direction of the air...i.e. dash vents, floor vents, defroster...etc. He said the one for the temp was missing a clip and the one for the direction was completely stretched out like someone was trying to rip it out. The stretched out cable has to be replaced, so he took the clip from that one and used it on the temp cable.

So now (well, I pick up the car tomorrow to make sure) I have cold air, but it will only come out of the dash vents. No complaints here...better than no air in Sacramento 100+ degree heat! However, it would be nice to have those functions work for when I sell the car and/or winter comes and I need the defroster.

But...I have no clue what this guy is talking about. Where's the cable and what clip is he talking about? Can anyone give me part #'s, pictures, a better a/c for dummies explanation and whether I'd be able to replace it myself? He said the parts would cost $100 and would be another hour or so of labor...at $100hr labor rate. So, $200 just to have the air flow up, down or forward. Seems rediculous to me.

I'm in no rush to get it done since I don't need the defroster and I don't think I've ever used floor vents. However, I am going to sell the car eventually and winter is only a couple months away.

Thanks for any help.

ohhhhh.... It took me a little while to figure out what you were saying. So what has happened is that the cables that control the vents are stretched. If the one for the temp works than you need the one that goes from the AC control to heater core box. The cable goes directly back behind the radio and attaches to an arm on the drivers side. You might be able to see it just by looking up there from the drivers floor but it would be easier to remove the radio and HVAC controls. You can get the cable at any junk yard for cheap. In fact i have one i can send you for the cost of shipping. It might take a little fighting with but it could be done without removing the dash or anything major. I will try to get some pics, but if you want the cable PM me your address and we will figure out shipping after that.

Yeah, that sounds like what they were talking about. I think they took the cable out when the knew it needed replacing cuz I have a cable sitting on my seat. Just an educated guess...I mean, I don't really know what this thing is. I'll try to get a photo of it tomorrow and post it up.

What about the 'clip'. Does anyone know what that is? I guess when I pull it apart (since it you said it wouldn't be that hard to do) I put 2 and 2 together.

I'll PM you my address and we'll see what we can do. It's gotta be cheaper than the $100 they quoted me. But, I need to go to the yards this Saturday, so I'm gonna see if I can just pocket one...

The clip holds the casing of the cable to the HVAC controls so that the cable inside moves to change the setting. I think i have a couple of those, i will send one with the cable.
