You cannot use the regular DE bearings with the GTiR rods. Here's why. The bearings on the GTiR are 19mm and not 17mm, so the alignment tang is not in the same location. You could put the 17mm bearing in there but it will not sit center in the rod.

Here shows the difference between the stock SR20 bearings and the GTiR bearings I am using. The rods have to be machined for the bigger bearing.

Here is the pics of the cometic. It looks like a nice piece, just the alignment dowels on the gasket are a little loose. Hope the pics help.

The stock gasket fits snug on these dowels, but the cometic is just a little loose. I dont' think it is a big deal, I have had zero issues.

GTi-R rods don't have to be machined for the bigger bearings... Right?

Correct.

if GTI-R bearings/rods are that much wider wouldn't some room need to be made in the journal on the crank to make it work?

I remember being able to slide my DE rods back and forth on the crank journal while doing a rod bearing replacement. I can see how there'd be 2mm of space, no problem.

there is, that is correct, i had just remembered someone saying the de/det bearings could be used on the gtir rods. but yeah with gtir bearings on gtir rods it would be no problem.

The rods are exactly the same width. The de rod is chamferred on the big end for using the smaller bearing. The GTI-R rod bearing uses the whole surface area of the rod. I will get up picks tonight. Thanks for all the input fellas.

This proven knowledge has been noted, thank you. I knew the R rods were diffrent because we have to machine standard rods to work with our bearings, I just didn't know how.

Just for the record. DET bearings will NOT work with GTIR rods. I have tried it, but it will require the gtir rods to be machined for the bearing notch. I had my pauter rods machined to accept both styles of bearings and if you put the bearing in the wrong tang you will see what I mean.

Plain and simple. GTIR rods=GTIR bearings. DE/DET rods=DE/DET bearings. The rods are the same width. But you can't just swap bearings and rods around like that. It doesn't work.

I agree with everything Coheed has stated. He's the man.. Here are some pics noting the differences.
