Actually, the last time I changed my plugs it was clear that the car runs on the LEAN side. So now I'm even more confused

What you see on the plugs may only represent mixture at the time you shut off the car. Spark plug deposits are stratified, or in layers. To do a proper plug read you need to do a heavy load/high rpm pass, then kill the motor, pull over, whip out a plug and eyeball it. Before availibility of wide band sensors, this was pretty much how a car was tuned.(yeah, I am a freakin dinosaur)

This is how Old Man detailed to me how he would tune cars when his brother and him were racing in SCCA. Old man was the chief of the crew and asked the pilot (his brother, my uncle) to do a run up to redline and kill the engine at the peak and coast into the pits. That was the only way to get a reading of what was going on inside of the combustion chamber back before we had sensors and live-time capturing to gather that information and display it to us in realtime like we have those wonderful luxuries now. Along with how he drilled his own caps for controlling fuel so he knew what was going into the engine. All those devilish details when men had to do actual work to tune a car vs hitting buttons on a keyboard or touch screen that we have now.

Oh to remember where we have come from to value what we have today and understand where we are going in the future. Nice reminder, @freakflier
