Burned on eBay!
So. My car, "Maria" is inspired by the legendary VZ-R, which had the seats from the R33 with an orange suede interior scheme. My plans were to do the same, using 2969 Alcantara and Vauxhall Corsa VXR Recaro seats. The seats tend to be advertised for around £700 or just a hair over $1k depending on the rate that day. I have seen the same seats advertised for months as they don't actually seem to sell for that. Well on 4 Jan I found a guy "breaking" (parting out) a Corsa VXR, which although is technically against eBay rules, its a done thing and is rarely enforced, mostly because people are decent human-f*ckin-beings... Mostly...

On 4 Jan I replied to this ebay item, CORSA VXR BREAKING | eBay I asked him through eBay how much he wanted for the seats. He replied £450 and he would ship them. Me, I thought wow ok this dude doesn't know what he has, but then thought, maybe he just needed the cash now and didn't feel like waiting for months like all the others on eBay.

I did my due diligence by asking him to email me pics. He included his email in the message and I emailed him through my hotmail. He then sent me pictures of the seats. However I noticed that the fourth picture he sent me was the same as some other dudes listing. I prompted him about it and he said he sent it by accident. I spoke to a friend of mine about it and he rationalized it by saying that maybe he had it saved to see what prices others were going for in similar condition or something.

Now the whole time I am communicating with this guy its only a few minutes before I get a reply. He said that since he was sending it through PayPal I would be protected if anything went wrong. Biting off on that even though my "spiddy-senses" told me otherwise, I have not heard from him since. I also do not have any seats.

I have reported him to the West Midlands Police, PayPal, ActionFraud Police UK and reported the items he had for sale on eBay.

After some digging I found that the pics on a previous listing of his were ripped from a gumtree.com (like craigslist) listing a month ago in London. I have three emails addresses for him. I googled them all and I found a post from what I think is his wife, who also is named on the PayPal account, and she is complaining about the prison doctors not taking care of him.

I had my wife inquire about a part for the VXR and he replied, so he is alive and kicking. I even bid on two of his other items, just for him to cancel them early. All his feedback is falsified as the only two people that bid on his items, minus myself, happen to only bid on his items. This also has been reported to eBay.

Back to the PayPal; This guy has done this before, he didn't send it as an invoice, he sent it as a request, therefore I am not covered by PayPal...

Below I will paste the email traffic up to the last email from him as well as the receipt, the email addresses and his eBay username.

What pisses me off the most about all this is that I knew better, it felt wrong, but I did it anyway. Let my mistake be a lesson the rest of you can learn the easy way. This is the second time this year (12 months anyway) that I have been burned on eBay, the last one was the "rebuilt" motor and if you have read my build thread than you know how that went.

I have tried my best to find this guy but all the methods I know and have worked in the past for me are not bearing any fruit.

I will keep you all posted as to what, if anything happens with this. The other bummer is that I can't just ask for more hours at work to make up for this and its a major setback as this car has to be done in June at the latest before I move.

Anyway, stay safe, stay smart, if something doesn't feel right, its aint worth it. I tried saving a few hundred dollars and its going to end up costing me twice as much.

Hi,

Sorry it was a crazy day at work catching up from before Christmas. Anyway, do you have a good number I can call? I am going to be honest, I am a bit hesitant because the fourth picture you sent me is the same picture as another VXR listing that is on eBay, but that is under a different name and miles away from you.

Thanks,
Matthew

As you can see he used the word invoice and I was doing half of it on my phone. I clearly knew better, trust yourselves, no one else, lol.

Thanks, we will see what happens. So far PayPal hasn't done anything yet. I've sent money request to all three addresses for the amount. My tactic is to try and annoy him into submission.

OK so PayPal reopened the case on the 11th and decide today in my favor and I was fully refunded. All is well now. Be smart people, if it smells funny don't eat it!

Thanks everyone, I did indeed get lucky... And I would be lying if I said I didn't fantasize about making a phone call to him (if I had his number) that would go something like; "Listen carefully, I have a special set of skills, I will find you. I will take my seats"...
