I usually hook to the alternator bracket and an open 12mm hole in the head behind the distributor near the intake cam seal. This is very easy to keep level. I always remove the tranny right before lifting it out of the car. Or if I got a lift I drop it out the bottom.

All I used was two sections of chain. One to the motor mount bracket on the passenger side, and one to the back of the motor on the driver's side, using a tranny bolt.

As a side note, I found that it was easier to take the swivel part of the engine stand off the stand, bolt it to the motor, and then slide the stand back onto the swivel piece once it was bolted. You'll never get it to hang exactly level to just bolt it up. I have always pulled my motors out the top with the engine hoist, I think everything else just seems like three times as much work.

The thing that you'll most likely run into is that you don't have long enough bolts to get through the engine stand and into the block. I went to NAPA with a stock tranny bolt and bought a couple of real long ones. Also, you'll have to get a long starter-size bolt (8mm I think) for your fourth mount to the engine stand. I had to use one of the unthreaded holes to mount up to. Make sense?

It makes perfect sense. For sure I'm going to bolt up the swivel first to the engine to make it much easier on me. I already have extended tranny bolts. Should I torque down the bolts?

God damn, you werent kidding about the four floor jacks. lol. I'll look into that hole by the cam seal.

I'll check this out too.

So at work I borrowed 2 engine lift chains.

As you can see there's a bolt on top of the box. its from the bracket that connects the upper intake manifold and the head, by the fuel injectors.

I think it's a 8mm x 1.25mm x 20mm. Can anyone confirm the bolt size? Should these be used with a torque wrench when using the lift chain? if so, how much?

That's exactly what I did.

yeah i love doing it through the bottom, it is soo much easier than trying to fight with it out the top and scraping everything up. The last 3 ive done ive done out the bottom.

Here is how i do it, i have the car on jackstands a decent amount up. use the engine hoist to lower the engine and tranny onto the ground.

Disconnect the engine hoist and hook it up the car and raise the car enough to pull the motor back out.

Lower the car back onto the stands until new motor is ready to go back in.

Raise the car again using the hoist and slide the motor and tranny into place.

Slowly lower the car back onto the jack stands making sure nothing hits like the stabalizer bar and shift linkage are the main concerns to clear.

Hook the engine hoist up to the engine and raise into place and bolt the passenger and tranny mounts up and remove the hoist.

I use a tow strap under the far left intake runner and around to either the exhaust manifold if its still on or the bigger coolant pipe just behind the thermostat housing, Worked for me every time with no problems. Ive done the same with a smaller chain also. I prefer strap because it doesnt scratch everything up.
