...well, on the positive side.. many weekends and evenings later, it is finally sorted where the engine is concerned! ...almost ready for its next track day!

The previous owner told us he changed the oil pump. What happened is that he changed the oil pump incorrectly (quick and dirty way) by NOT properly removing the head to replace it and the head gasket. Apparently he decided to cut away that portion of the head gasket and use RTV when replacing the front cover/oil pump combo. (and used some incorrect bolts in the process of changing the engine along with front cover/oil pump)

Good to know, I never had to replace (only removed) and oil pump, but that's good to know. I take it there is no way to not destroy the stock head gasket when removing the oil pump? What about metal ones, would that prevent needing to remove the head?

I have replaced quite a few oil pumps without pulling the head, you just have to be careful about it, I havent ever had one come back leaking. I have also never cut the gasket apart though, either

It was the stock OEM gasket that was butchered and it left jagged edges twisting up and down making it impossible to seal. It was simply an extremely piss-poor oil pump change is the bottom line.

EDIT
Here are the photos to demonstrate exactly what I'm talking about:

wow, that is horrible. ive done it in car, undo the y pipe, upper engine mount and upper radiator hose, and slowly drop the engine with a jack, or pole jack if your on a lift, you can access it pretty easily, and just be careful when reinstalling it should be good to go. if anyone was wondering.

I could see doing that on a lemons car in the pits at 2AM, but on a serious racecar?

^ Yes, it was an unpleasant surprise (no other way to put it)

I had to do one on my ve. My oil pump had been taken apart before and I never knew it, got it with the head. I had a vet metal gasket. It can be done with a steady hand. Engine had great oil pressure, and the car ran great when I rear ended my buddy.
