What color bottle of Valvoline are you guys using? They have white, blue, and silver. Red Line MT-90 is a full synthetic. The only Valvoline comparable would be another full synthetic, or silver color Valvoline gear oil.

Otherwise, it is just comparing composure vs performance within the certain target.

I've used the white and blue, didn't notice any difference.

BUT if you read valvoline's data sheets for any of those oils you'll notice an * beside GL4 and it recommending one of these instead:
• Valvoline Professional Series Manual Transmission Fluid or
• Valvoline Synchromesh Manual Transmission Fluid (available September 2012)

Silver http://www.valvoline.com/pdf/synpower_gear.pdf
White http://www.valvoline.com/pdf/high_performance_gear.pdf
Blue http://www.valvoline.com/pdf/durablend_gear.pdf

This is the VPS gear oil they are saying to use for applications where GL4 is required

Good article , I always used redline however , after several years I switched back to OEM Nissan limited slip tranny fluid.

I tried the valveoline and worked well too , but honestly since I have been running oem Fluid it's night and day , my tranny shifts smooth as butter .

Now keep in mind if your big dog status pushing 500 hp + I suggest redline or similar viscosity fluid

Good article
I have called Pennzoil (synchromesh)and Valvoline more than once to see what they say about running their gear oils in our cars.

EVERYTIME they have told me NOT to use it. That it may be fine, but it could deteriorate the yellow metals over time.It seems most of the guys using it dont have the tranny long enough to start to fail.
This is why I use Redline or Amsoil.
My cars get driven 50-100 or more every day,so I dont want to take any chances.
I have found a local Amsoil dealer that sells me a case at a time. All I have to do is call him ,and he meets me at a local store parking lot .He gives me a little break on the price.

I am all about saving money,so dont get me wrong...but it seems like the guys who swear by the Valvoline, and other alternatives to Redline or Amsoil(and royal purple maxgear, which I have used in a pinch, but its too expensive) all make big HP but dont drive as much or they blow their engines before enough miles are put on to TRULY make an argument about how good they are.

If the manufacturer says not to use it,I will go by that until someone shows me a trans with over 100000 miles that has used the WRONG gear oil(GL-5)
Compared to a similar mileage trans that has used GL-4....side by side gearstacks and synchros.

Until then,I dont mind paying 10-12 bucks a qt for peace of mind.
Amsoil MTG...FTW

Thats my .02. do what you want
