Calling SR20 tranny guru's!!!
So this is the problem I am having. I am going to call it a "phantom" problem because other then what I am hearing, nothing else is going wrong....

o Symptom: Weird dull "grinding" sound within the tranny itself. Grinding noise gets progressively louder/harder as I shift upward through gears.

o Steps taken to fix: Drained gear oil (which was quite dark), did not see any metal shavings what-so-ever....refilled with fresh gear oil.

With the front of the car up on jack stands I start the car and run through the gears. Maybe I am just over-reacting, but I thought these tranny's were suppose to run relatively quiet....this is a rather loud and noticeable grinding noise I am hearing.....has anyone experienced or noticed a similar issue? I am not having an shifting problems, no clutch grab issues, no 5th gear pop-out.....input appreciated.

Are the symptoms I am describing indicative of an input shaft bearing crapping out?

The grinding noise with no shifting or pop out issues. I just bought a P11 trans that the guy said it was making a grinding noise with no flakes when he drained the oil. I opened it up and the input shaft bearing was shredded and because the pieces were so big they got caught by the magnet

Well hopefully you find something on the way in the trans that will fix it. Otherwise you’re better off due diligent

To be a little more specific regarding my symptoms....

o the grinding noise can also be heard when rolling in neutral and making a half or full right turn....I suspect an axle but not 100%, an axle usually makes a repetitive thud or knuckle knocking noise and that's not what I am hearing...
o When I accelerate on the throttle up to about 7,000 in first gear I can hear a very high pitch whistle/whine but it goes away when I shift through the rest of the gears (perhaps a bearing)

The only other thing I think it can be (considering I hear the noise from the center to the front right of the car) is a wheel hub bearing....

Now leaning towards to wheel bearing or loose axle nut

An input shaft bearing will make noise with the clutch out, but stop when you press the clutch in.

OK, so I am prety sure it's not the input shaft bearing....so I will tear apart the wheel bearings and check them out, they are probably original and I just turned 255,555
