Whining I'm Baffled
Hey all.

I have a whine under load at about 3800 rpms and up 1991 B13 sr20ve swapped sr16ve tranny. I have replaced a lot trying to track it down.

Here is a list of new parts replaced:

Power steering pump
water pump
alternator
new belts
ac delete
transmission
clutch
throwout bearing
front passenger wheel bearing

and the whine is still present!

the engine is a Gspec VVL and runs like a champ. I put the front up on jack stands and tried to recreate the sound but heard nothing. It only does it under heavier acceleration and some deceleration nothing is audible in lower rpms. does not whine when turning corners. I am running shockproof light in the tranny which I replaced the past week. It sounds like its coming from the passenger side of the car. I am starting to think its resonance from the poly mounts. Please help! This whine is making me broke!

Does it sound like this?

Can hear it here on deceleration

Mines an SR16VE and I have a friend with another who's makes exactly the same noise.

I'm 95% sure its transmission related, as its the only thing left for me to change...

Ill check the grounds. It sounds mechanical though, like a bearing on the alternator. Its an ultima alternator from O'reillys a remanufactured one (theyre known crap). The first one I got was bad out of the box. I think its a Mitsubishi one which didn't fit the bracket on the VE. I had to grind about a 1/4 inch from one of the ears on the alternator to get it to slide in. All the audio has been deleted out of the car.

Thanks for the reply.

Mine is not as high pitched as that but behaves the same. I swapped my tranny out thinking it was going last week (but it wasn't the tranny) It's still there. I think it's alternator. Do you have poly bushings in the mounts? I do and I'm starting to think its just natural resonance. The old tranny shifted great when I took it out.

I have a new (not remanufactured) alternator on the way. It will be here tomorrow. Hopefully it will take care of it. If not I quit, I'll just put ear plugs in.

what kind of power steering fluid are you using? our cars require ATF in the ps..

i was running power steering fluid in my car for a long time and it would whine, i changed over to ATF and the whine is alot quieter but still there, maybe i didnt get all the ps fluid out or maybe the damage to the pump was done, idk.. runs an drives an turns fine tho.

I ran ps fluid for on a brand new pump for about 100 miles the realized it was the wrong fluid. I took it out and cycled atf through it (which is what is in there now). It never whines when turning because the rpms are below the "whine point" which is around 3800 rpms. Cruising at 3800 and up it's quiet though it behaves a lot like Thesams posted video, under acceleration and deceleration.

Thanks for the response.
