How much more can I grind?
Hey,

Need some info on this. I'm grinding away at the spot in the picture circled below:

How deep can I go?? What's behind here? I've already ground quite a bit of it away but don't want to grind into an oil or coolant galley. Looks like there's a coolant galley above it but not sure how that's being routed.

Thanks!

lol @ your tiny grind..I'll have to send a pic of what I've already ground...basically both plates with SR20 and the number is ground down 'flush' with the block and I think I've even ground down a little more and STILL need to grind a little more off....this is what happens when you try to fit a 2871R turbo with an internal wastegate using an Avenir manifold. Also, where I need to grind is more where the SR20 plate is..like right on top of that spot.

The last time we ground more off the wastegate than the block, but went a little too far on the wastegate lip and messed up the diaphragm :/

I'm just wondering how far can I go until I grind something important off? I ground down a spot on the block for the turbo so much I went through to the bell housing (I see light!) nothing some JB weld can't fix!

If the RWD block is the same from the transmission side of the block..then it looks like there's nothing behind the sr20 plate except a hole:

Can anyone else confirm? I'm having a hard to find a transmission side view of the block

I wasn't 100% sure, so I didn't reply. But that second picture says it all. Go buck wild on the grinding. You'll be fine.

Edit: Here's the best picture I could find of my FWD block in an appropriate view.

This picture also may or may not be of help.

Okay, I found one more picture. Probably what you wanted all along.

I made my life easier by just reclocking the turbo and wg. Is that not possible in this case?

Awesome guys, thanks for all the help! new wastegate mounted great. Hopefully I can roll some 22psi race gas now.

@Vadim: After taking this turbo off for like 10 times now, it's a situation of 'it's always been that way'. Don't want to touch anything. Everything's ground down and everything right where it needs to be.

btw, we were able to unbolt the downpipe from the 2-bolt gasket area and pull the turbo forward which made changing the wastegate a little easier without taking the entire turbo out. Granted, we also pulled the radiator to fix a melted slim fan..getting the car ready for another track day next month.

I hear ya on pulling the turbo. What water and oil lines are you running? I find it a lot easier to pull the Turbo of my rr block then det block with ss lines.
