My biggest oopsie:
After I got my NX, it developed a clunking noise near the front right wheel. I figured it was the CV joint, so I replaced it with a good, used one. Put on the retainer clip, gave the axle a good whack, and reinstalled the rest of the parts. Job done in half an hour.
I went for a testdrive, and when I made a U turn to go back home (end of the street), I heard a loud POP, and the engine revs went up, but no power whatsoever. Right axle was spinning, so had to be the CV joint.
Dad towed me back (long street), and put her back onto the jack. Re-replaced the CV joint, making sure to give it a couple of hard blows with my hammer. Result: Compressed threads on the axle, and the nut wouldn't go on. I cut a piece of the broken axle off with a dremel (tedious work), and managed to install the nut.
Ordered a new CV-joint, same problem. Axle would pop out of the CV joint if I turned too sharply. But I was sure I installed the retainer clip, and I couldn't figure out what was wrong. Thankfully the axle never popped out when I was way out of town.
I got used to it, though, jacking up the car and putting in the axle again, once in a while.
However, when I replaced my shot set of K-sports for some stock struts and springs, I figured that I might as well try to fix the damn joint.
So there I sat, removing all the bolts and nuts, pulling the knuckle out, so I could remove the CV-joint. Pulled it off the axle, and I reached for the retainer clip on the axle.
As I removed it, something shot away from the axle, and I saw it land from the corner of my eye. After a short search, I found what sprung away.
A second retainer-clip. Which had been sitting in the groove all the time. Preventing the first clip to actually secure the CV joint.
Man, I felt stupid, and relieved at the same time.
