The regulator in the alt is shot and the voltage is spiking. The bulbs are the first to go because they're not as forgiving as the rest of the electrical system.
I had a 1989 Ford Probe back in the day with the exact same issue. Headlights got bright and blew when I got on the gas because the voltage spiked, although I didn't realize it at the time. I put new lights in and BAM, same thing. I found that running the rear defogger soaked up the voltage spikes and acted as a regulator until I could track down an aftermarket alternator. I did this for the better part of a year because at the time the only alts available were Ford units, $400+ at the dealer.
