Admittedly I've come to the forum game late. If you'd stuck around on the mailing list (I assume you're not on it anymore) you'd have found my first e-mail on there around September of 2002. I caught the tail end of the list's heydays, but it's still rockin' and I'm still contributing.

I don't think I need to start a thread to discuss this matter further, as this thread is already about engine smoothness.

I apologize for my overarching comment about your experience and knowledge on the subject. Your comment was the last I'd read that night in a string of bad posts on this forum and another ( www.e30tech.com ). I was fed up with trying to explain things as I normally do, and got frustrated and confrontational. Sorry again.

please also note that the sr20 have block girdles, block girdles are for increased bottom end strength for high revving, and keeping everything solid and together, the hondas dont have thse however there are few compnies out there, that make them for the hondas ie: endyn, golden eagle

no obviously thisi s a sr20 pus becuase it has thi from the factory and that just goes to show you the kinda thought process behind the sr20 as to what type of power handling these are capable if they ome with these girdles that hondas have to have machined for the block to make them stronger, as to where the sr20 have these stock.

avenir block girdle - http://www.crank-scrapers.com/Avenir_block_4wd.jpg

note- the 10 point block girdle design

hnoda block girdle- http://www.azracemachine.com/images/CrankGirdle/CrankGird37o.jpg

note the 6 point block girdle design

i feel the stock sr20 girdle altho not the type of machining or the material of the endyn the sr20 has better design as the strengthening is overall over the entire bottom end, instead of the just middle part of the bottom end.

most definitly you, DEFINITLY have to think of how much integrity the sr20 has if they are coming stock with 10 point block girdles, that just SCREAMS business, not only that but almost ALL honda owners, upgrade to block girdles on their b16/gsr to rev HIGHER than stock....and the sr20s come stock with these? think about it

I came in late, I'm not going to read the whole thing. the cars are 64% on the front. They are not, nor will they ever be 'balanced.' The engines are phenomenal. Even better if you want to spend the bux on a VE. If you've ever seen one open, you'll wonder how they EVER break. Their biggest problem is that indeed after 100k the rods journals stretch and thence the bearings spin. For '91-94, if you can find a good one, there's nothing like 'em. Better, for my bux, if you can find one that's not trashed and you can afford it and you don't want to spend hotrod money on it, is an RSX, but those came along a lot later. But ain't nobody taking away my '93 :-)

The VE is an outstanding motor. I have noticed that the newer motors rev easier and smoother. The RR motors are very smooth, but lower on redline. Maybe you have sloppy motor mounts. I don't think the balance is out as far as the internals. My first DE crank with 85k miles on it was spun on a balancer before going in my VE-T and it was deemed nearly perfect!

The crank was out of balance by 13lbs at 8k rpm. A stock srt4 crank was out 19lbs at only 6k. That is a huge difference! Also all the stock rods and piston assemblies were within 5 grams of each other, even with all the carbon deposits.

I have no prob running the stock internals with no balance work done. Maybe the honda motors seem to run so much smoother because you can't feel anything other than the deafening sound coming from them! haha. JK. Honda makes good motors! Perhaps better designed than the SR. But do say a D series revs smoother than a SR... crap. My wifes GA16DE sentra is a much smoother ride than my friend's D16y8.

I think the sr motors are very smooth as long as there is nothing wrong. My old DE ran extremely smooth and I beat the hell out of it for years before I got my VE.
