Two piece crank pulley and a lot of RPM can separate it hard enough to toss it. Rubber starts to dry out after about 6-7 years from natural wear.

The battery would eventually die because it is not being recharged unless you are putting on some device to recharge it. A crank pulley remover will remove it without damaging it or things near it. Or two pry bars, I have used them to removed crank pulleys before, but typical will chip away the lips which should not be a problem if one is broken anyway.

This happened to me when my alternator seized up. The belt stayed on and twisted it off. Mine ended up wedged between the motor and the sheet metal.

I just pulled the pulley off my USDM motor and put it on. no UR for me yet.
