Thread: Odometer Diagnosis

Alright so I have a little problem with the B13. The speed odometer does not work. I need help figuring this out because electrical diagnosis is not my forte. One thing that is eliminated from the equation is the speed sensor, it's working 100%. I hooked up data scan and there was no signal from the odometer on there either. So I'm going to check the signal at the tachometer..... But how does this thing work does the sensor send the signal to the ecu then to the tach or the other way around?

Does this look correct?

Pin # 6- (Y/G)- I'm assuming this leads to ecu.
Pin #16- (G) Leads to speed sensor
Pin #18- (R) leads to sensor sensor
Pin # ??- I am assuming that this is ground I have no idea what color it is yet maybe black.

Status:6-17-12
Speed-odometer- OK
Speed sensor - OK
Speed sensor connector - Ok
Speed sensor connector ( harness side ) - OK
Speed odometer harness (interior) - OK

So the tach works just the speedo doesn't? Just fool proof it is 100%about digi speedo?

That's a nice write up but it made me a little confused.



Tach was working prior to swap... Analog tach..... after swap was performed it all of a sudden stopped working...... Actually I think I just came up with a way to check this. the idea just hit me after I made the post so stand by guys.....the issue might even be with one of those 3 grey connectors bolted to the inner driver side frame of the car. I'll have to check this in the morning...

Had the same problem in one of my '93 SE-Rs. The tach worked but the speedometer and odometer wouldn't.

Tach signal is driven from the ECU directly. You can bypass this to a wire on the distributor however if yours has stopped working.

Curious my B13 is a 1993 but I switched from a 93 ecu to a 94 ecu...could the pin outs be different on the ecu?

If u want i got cable cluster and speedo im noy doing anything with. All u need is the cable

I'm trying to trace this wiring with out removing the harness and it's a pain in the balls I may have to call it a day and tackle this later in the week....This is a very aggravating process and I don't want to be out late tonight in the dark (again). I'm not sure what's going on but it seems that some where down the line of the harness the color of the wiring goes flip mode and changes colors on me. Right now I can't figure out where these wires even lead to the inside of the car with out ripping apart the harness.

What was your previous setup, and what is your current setup? I see someone mentions my writeup, are you using an NX1600 digital gauge cluster?

And I'm also confused about what part isn't working. You mention that your "speed odometer" doesn't work. This doesn't make sense.

The speedometer shows speed, or how fast you're going (that's kind of a given), the odometer shows what distance you have travelled in total, and has 6 digits. The trip-meter can be reset, and has 4 digits.

As for what connects to what, the speed sensor (located in the transmission) connects to the speedometer directly, and after that to the odometer and trip-meter. Then it goes to the ECU (this is the pin I labeled "11 - Speed signal to ECU" in my write-up on the digital cluster).

The tachometer (RPMs) is controlled by the sensor that's inside the distributor, and it only measures RPM (and has thus nothing to do with the speedometer, odometer and trip-meter).

So again, which of these 4 gauges doesn't work?

Speedometer (MPH)
Tachometer (RPM)
Odometer (Miles/lifetime)
Trip-meter (Miles/trip)

After that is clear, we can really begin checking things.
