What's your secret? (DS wheel hub vs. axle)
Okay, I've beat it up, pounded away, and I can't get the damn DS axle to come away from the hub. I can't get the damn tie rod end out of the damn thing either. And since I can't get the above two items, I can't get the damn LCA freed from the hub!

What's your secret? It's ticking me off, becuase the pass. axle came out like a breeze.

(A different topic would be that HOLY CRAP barely any gear oil came out. I'm thinking maybe 2 quarts?! Geezus good thing I'm doing all this. Finding MANY things that need to be fixed now.)

Put a piece of wood over the end (or a spare axle nut) and beat the f*ck out of it. It'll happen. I use a 5 lb sledge and sometimes it still gets me huffin and puffin.

What he said, exept keep the axle nut on to where the crown of it is just past the last threads on the axle then use a block of wood so you dont damage the threads at all. if you do it will just make your life even harder. haha. Just use some grease next time you put it back in so it wont be so difficult and seize up in there from rust.

i just took mine out tonight and it just slid out. usually its hard to get out of the tranny, but i just popped it out with a prybar no problem. i had to use some pb blaster on the nut to get it off but the axle itself came out easy with the strut disconnected.

Yeah, all you should need to do is disconnect the strut and the axle nut and you should be good to go. I use a rock chisel and a hammer to separate the axle from the trans.

Sweet guys, I guess I'll pull out the 5lb sledge then. I was using a rubber mallot

I'm not worried about the threads on the axle. It's toasted, and I've got a replacement that will go in it's place. I'll get on it after breakfast Took the day off of work since there's nothing going on.

i use a regular hammer

I put the jack on the rotor(part that sticks out), jack it up a little bit to relieve pressure, loosen the Ball Joint bolt, bang the knuckle with the hammer, it will loosen, then use a prybar or metal stick.

Bang the knuckle so the tie rod end would loosen up. Dont hit the tie rod.

yeah and as ashton said, leave the axle nut on, I'd rather destroy that than the axle. Then bang the hell out of that.

I need to replace both control arms, and tie rod ends. I'm not worried about damaging either. Nor am I worried about the DS axle getting damaged, as I'm replacing it anyway. (torn boot).

Anyhow, I got the axle out after pounding it with the rubber mallot, and the axle nut screwed on a little bit, for extra pounding surface. Came out fine, but now I can't get the damn tie rod end bolt or the LCA bolt free. They seem to be seized on the hub/spindle whatever it's called. I just hit them both with some PB blaster, so hopefully they'll free up a bit. Both boots are torn on both LCA's, and both tie rod ends.

Good thing I was down here pulling everything apart. Now I'm sure that by replacing these defective items in the front, that she'll feel MUCH tighter. Now I'm thinking that while I'm down here, I can replace the sway bar Or, at least replace the bushings, if possible.

Wow if youre not worried about damaging anything, you can go at it like a mad man!
