might also be one of the 2 seals on the oil filter housing

i suggest doing what stratton suggested......clean everything really well and then see if you can find where it's coming from....there are just too many places in that area that can cause this

my front main oil seal leaks and it doesn't get any where near as far as you say you's does

I have this same problem. Everything above the seal is dry. Picked up my seal yesterday. But yes, take off the belts, crank pulley (which for some reason I dread), pop out the old one, oil up the new one and tap it in with a large socket. The seal is like $9-$10.00. The seal has angles cut in it and goes in based on the cut angles. Seems like I read somewhere to that you can soak the seal in oil too before install, but not really sure on that. Might have been for some other type of seal. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this.

I've had the valve cover gasket drop out from the groove in the back when installing it and tightening down the valve cover sliced the gasket in the rear area. That's the only thing I can think of that would cause oil back there where you have some of that blue. But Stratton's advice on cleaning is the best thing to do.

YES cleaning it up is the best.

On another note. The guy that I got mine from knew he had a leak and just kept adding oil and driving it 80 plus miles a day. That driving allowed the oil to move ALL over that side of the motor and cake up. Up, down, back...all over.

Yes I know i'm very late to the discussion, and you probably already figured out what the problem was, still I wanted to chime in. Anyway I too had a leak coming from that location a few months ago. I thought it was the oil pan so I took it off and re sealed it with some permatex grey. Still had a leak, so I checked the oil filter. Turns out the stupid oil filter was loose and it was leaking oil.

Thanks. I actually never found out what the problem was, because the car got wrecked about a week after this post was made. Damn racoons/cats/foxes whatever it was
