So let's say you have a GA16DE (tech & dyno info inside)...
Ok, so i've got a B13 LE. It's a GA16DE car. The GA isin't a bad little motor, it runs very reliably and feels pretty smooth. A discussion came up on another forum about swapping vs doing mods. Others had some uninformed stuff to say; however i think my research is well thought out and informitive enough to post over here. Dyno plots are taken from Kojima's buildup on sentra.net, and the stock SE-R dyno is from Rodney Sparks' comparison with the neon

Stock vs stock:

Ouch! 110hp vs 140hp doesn't tell the whole story compared to a dyno, does it? I think the GA's HP rating is a bit optimistic since it's losing over 20% through the wheels, while the SR loses a more realistic 15%...

Let's give the GA16 full boltons, and just for fun we'll throw JWT cams and an extrude hone manifold on the GA:

So the bolt-on GA doesn't really compare. You've gotta spend the big bucks on JWT cams and the intake manifold just to match the SR's top end. The SR's 400cc advantage is evident at the low end as well.

For my $2000 (estimate) in stuff that it takes to hop up a GA16 to 120whp, I'd rather have a SR20VE.

the ga is a good motor. ive worked on one a couple years ago.. and it would run down lightly modded sr20's. but there is a point when you cant get anymore. and the truth is ...no matter what anyone tells you...that there is no replacement for displacement.

NA I would not mess with the GA. Now if you plan on doing a nice turbo build they can be a lot of fun if and only done right. Search Wes he has a 1.6T 200sx that is just flat out awesome.

Wow thanks for the numbers!

I was thinking about actually getting a GA16, making it as fast as a stockish SR, and still enjoy the 30/40 MPG's. But I guess that would cost more then I would save on gas

This is why I'm just making my SR faster/more efficient

There's always technology... I hear that statement from V8 hillbillies all the time (not that a V8 cant be done right, but I hear that phrase from the rednecks with **** box Mustangs ans Camaros all the time).

Regardless, I've seen stock SE-Rs get rocked by Integra GSRs a few times, hmmm... 200cc less of a motor there...

Now its a proven fact that if you invest a good amount of money into any motor if done right it will run right.

The thing is if you choose to let say build a NA GA it would cost you a pretty penny. It would all boil down to how much you like the motor. If you spend the same amount of money in the 2.0 the 2.0 will be faster.

I agree that there is no replacement for displacement. How many 4 cylinder cars do you see running in the 8's let alone 9's NA? V8's have been doing it for years.

Heh, there's only so much "technology" involved in the GA16 though.

VTC intake cam baby!

Anyway, N/A GA16 is just plain not worth it. However, these bad boys take well to moderate boost.
