Thread: High idle

Yuck. I don't like seeing that thing.

Can a bad spark plug wire cause these weird idle issues? I just recently changed my spark plug wires out for a set of new Nissan wires. So far all has been good (knock on wood). One of the old (Magnecor)wires was broken. This happened a while back, come to think of it, this weird idle shit started after I broke that wire.

Friends don't let friends use aftermarket ignition parts.

I've learned that lesson now, believe me. I now have all new Nissan ignition components. Wires, distributor cap, and rotor. Fuel filter is Nissan as well, spark plugs are NGK. Car seems to idle better. Also it seems to me that the idle drops a lot faster after a cold start. With the old wires and Autozone ignition parts, the idle would take forever to drop to normal.

Well this problem is back again. This morning I start up the car and all is fine. Idle starts off a little high, in the 1500 range but it settles back down to it's normal 700 rpms. Now i'm sitting at a stop light and the idle starts to go down like it wants to stall, then up, then down again. Now it goes high to about 1600 and stays there. I turn the engine off then back on again and it's still high. Get back home and I turn off the engine, turn it back on and it goes back to normal rpm level. This is a weird thing that has been happening off and on for about 2 years now. Usually when this happens I just turn off the engine and when I restart it, it's back to normal again. I don't think it's a vacuum leak, if it was it would do it all the time right?

Mine does this in cold weather once it is well heated up it doesnt. I've long suspected the aac valve and tried to delete it but then the problem was always correcting itself. After driving for 30 mins does it still do this?

Does seem like it does it more in the morning when it's cold, or whenever the car has been sitting for awhile. It also does it at random times like after driving on the highway for like 20-30 min. Like I will get off of the highway and come to a stop at the traffic light, it will then start with the 1500 rpm idle. I'll then turn it off and then back on, that will usually correct it.

My car was doing this a while back and regrounding the TPS fixed it, check with a voltmeter for voltage between the TPS ground and one of the screws on the intake manifold. Here's my thread if it helps you any: http://www.sr20-forum.com/general-sr20/58492-idle-sticking-high.html
